Our Day out at John Muir
On Friday the 4th of October P7 went on a trip to Eshaness for a walk along the coast and the cliffs. We went out on the 8:30 ferry to Laxo then got picked up by a man called John (not John Muir!) in a minibus and he took us to the Eshaness lighthouse.
Next he supplied us with bags and water-proof jackets, we also had to take our water bottles and put them in the other bags. We then walked to the edge of a giant hole. John said the hole was 100ft deep and that over time the waves had smashed the cave roof down and now it was a hole. We kept on walking to the edge of the cliffs, John told us to stay his height length away from the edge. He told us to line up then he
held on to our bags one by one and let us look over. The view was stunning it was so high and the waves smashed against the edge of the cliff. We then walked to a lot of rocks where we climbed down to this little place where we had a snack. We could see down to the cliff edge from the rocks, there was two caves which were some of the biggest in Britain. When we finished eating we climbed back on to the route we were taking.
Then we kept on walking. We walked to another set of rocks then stopped and ate our packed lunch. We went for a walk around the stones. We saw a crystal clear pond. We had to walk in single file line around the rocks. We kept walking for a while then turned back. On the way back we went to a very old castle where Mrs Polson told us to line up on a rock wall in the loch and she took our picture. When we walked back John told us a bit about John Muir he said that he was born in Dunbar. When he was a bit older his family moved to a farm in America. He said one day he was working in a well then he stabbed himself in the eye, then one day he woke up and he could see again.
Then we walked back to the minibus, which was parked next to the lighthouse. When we got back to the minibus we sorted out our bags and got back on the minibus. When we got to Laxo we were half an hour early for the ferry so we had to wait for a while. We got back to the Whalsay on the 2:45 ferry.
I liked this trip and I would definitely do it again!
