On the 2nd of October 2019 Emma Chittick came up to Whalsay School to do a stem workshop with us. We had the choice of building a land yacht out of Lego or to build and programme a robot, we chose the land yacht.
We had to think about making the yacht stable and making sure the sail was facing the wind so it could take in as much wind as possible.
It didn’t work the first time because the sail wasn’t facing the right way so it didn’t move. We took it back to our desk and adjusted it but it still wouldn’t work because our sail wasn’t in the right place.
When we went back to alter it we just started again because it was just a fail at this point. When we started again we built the structure a little bit different.
When it came to the time to race then everybody had a chance to show everyone what they have done. Our one was the most messy and smallest, it was just falling apart but when we placed it in front of the fan then ours surprisingly went to furthest.
We enjoyed working together because we communicated a lot with each other. We also liked the problem solving and building. We both thought it was very fun too.

On the 2nd of October Emma Chittick came up to Whalsay p6/7 to make land yachts and Robots with Lego and mini sails, we made a Lego yacht and we had a race to see who could go the farthest and we came second. We made two lego characters to go on our land yacht and their names were Bettie (she is a girl) and Jim (he is a boy). We had lots of fun and you needed to use maths and engineering but you never realised you were doing maths. We got it to move the first time but not very far so we moved the sail around the back and we got it to move farther but not very fast so we took of weight and put on another sail. The sail had to be big or it didn’t move very far. We had lots of fun and we would love to do it again and you also did lots of teamwork and everybody had fun. By Andy and Tom
