P3/4 have been busy exploring our RNLI topic and recently put their problem-solving skills to the test with a very exciting boat-building challenge!
We began by investigating floating and sinking and learning about a special force called upthrust. We discovered that the shape and design of a boat can make a big difference to how well it floats.
Then came the challenge! Each pair was given just one 30cm square of tinfoil and had to turn it into a boat. There was plenty of thinking, planning and testing involved. Would a deep boat work best? Should the sides be tall? How wide should the bottom be?
Once the boats were ready, it was time for the ultimate test – how much cargo could each boat hold before it sank?
They were encouraged to test ideas, solve problems and make a plan before building their boats.
There was lots of excitement as cargo was added one piece at a time, with everyone hoping their boat would stay afloat! The boats that carried the most cargo without sinking were our winners. 🏆
This STEM challenge was an opportunity for P3/4 to develop their problem-solving, teamwork, creativity and perseverance skills – all while learning more about how boats work and the important work of the RNLI.
