Titanic

This term we are finding out all about the Titanic! There are lots of things we want to find out about.

Some of our questions are:

Where did the Titanic sail from?

How many people were on board?

How many people survived?

What route did the Titanic take?

What is the difference between the different classes on board?

Last week we started making a big Titanic display on our classroom wall – each group had a different task and we all worked together to create it.

Our weeks learning 11.11.16

This week we have been continuing to learn about measuring in maths. We have learnt about length, weight and capacity. Today we have been learning about area and perimeters.

We wrote firework acrostic poems on Wednesday. Last week we worked in groups to create poems and used them to make our own. They were very interesting!

Our topic this term is Light & Dark and this week we looked at different sources of light and what they are used for. We have also made a cave in our classroom.

We also had a visit from a new Gritter. We are entering a competition to name the new gritters. It was really interesting to find out all about them and what they do in the winter.

New School Year

Welcome to a new school year in the P2/3 classroom!

This term we have been doing Fairyland as a topic. We have been very busy turning our classroom into Fairyland!

We had a visit from a Dragon who left us a letter asking us to turn the classroom into Fairyland because the real Fairyland was disappearing and the Dragon was worried that none of his fairyland friends would have anywhere to live. So far, we have made a giant beanstalk, Jack, magic beans, a cow, a castle and a giant! We have also made dragon masks and Hansel & Gretel sweetie houses.

We have also made a dragon based on what we think our visiting dragon looks like.

We have been reading lots of Fairytales and have really enjoyed them all.

Ancient Egypt

Two weeks ago we mummified tomatoes. We had been learning about how Ancient Egyptians mummified the bodies of the Pharaohs. We decided to mummify tomatoes to see how it worked.

First we cut a hole in the tomato, then we scooped out all the seeds. We cleaned our tomatoes inside and out with an anti bacterial wipe to wipe away any bacteria that was on the tomato. We then filled the tomatoes with a mixture of salt and bicarbonate of soda (natron) and put the tomatoes in a tub and poured the rest of the mixture over it.  We kept two control tomatoes as well.

We left them for two weeks to see what would happen!

The tomatoes left in the mixture had shrivelled up and all the moisture had been taken out of them. The skin was no longer smooth, it was very wrinkly. There was no mould on any of our tomatoes but there was mould on the control one.

The tomatoes smelt horrible after being in the mixture!

We all enjoyed taking part in the experiment!

Viking Trip to the Museum

We went on a trip to the Museum last week. First, Yvonne showed us the map of Scandinavia. Then she showed us pictures of a Viking Long Ship and a Long House. We went to see the Sixareen. Yvonne told us a Viking Long Ship would be at least twice the size of the Sixareen. We then went to the cabinets to see all the Viking Artefacts that have been found in Shetland and other places. There were two girls from Norway that were dressed in Viking clothes. After we had looked at all these, we had our snack and then we were given clay to make a Thor’DSCN0666 DSCN0669 DSCN0670 DSCN0671 DSCN0674 DSCN0675 DSCN0676 DSCN0677 DSCN0688 DSCN0689 DSCN0691 DSCN0694 DSCN0696s hammer to wear around our neck. We really enjoyed our trip and would love to go back again another time!

The Weather

This term we are learning about the weather. So far we have learnt about the seasons, how many there are (4) and what kind of weather we get in each season. We have also been learning about the months of the year, there are 12, and what months are in each season. We also found out how many weeks there are in a year- 52! At the moment we are in Autumn.

We have started to make our igloo as part of out weather topic.  We have LOTS of milk bottles and so far have made two layers.  We are enjoying making it.
