We are learning all about 3D and 2D shapes this term. We looked at a variety of 3D shapes and found out what they were called. Some shapes can have two names, for example, a cylinder is also a prism. We then looked at the 2D shapes within 3D shapes and what they are all called. In pairs we chose a 3D shape to create using paper. We really enjoyed this task!
Titanic
This term we are finding out all about the Titanic! There are lots of things we want to find out about.
Some of our questions are:
Where did the Titanic sail from?
How many people were on board?
How many people survived?
What route did the Titanic take?
What is the difference between the different classes on board?
Last week we started making a big Titanic display on our classroom wall – each group had a different task and we all worked together to create it.
Up Helly Aa
One of our pupils was lucky enough to be part of the Lerwick Jarl Squad this year! He brought in his costume to show the class and told us all about how it was made. We were delighted he was able to show us his outfit and tell us all about his day and night!
Some of the questions other pupils asked were:
How special is the costume to you? (Very!)
How is the wool attached to the suit?
Where will you store the suit?
Scalloway Fire Festival
Our weeks learning 11.11.16
This week we have been continuing to learn about measuring in maths. We have learnt about length, weight and capacity. Today we have been learning about area and perimeters.
We wrote firework acrostic poems on Wednesday. Last week we worked in groups to create poems and used them to make our own. They were very interesting!
Our topic this term is Light & Dark and this week we looked at different sources of light and what they are used for. We have also made a cave in our classroom.
We also had a visit from a new Gritter. We are entering a competition to name the new gritters. It was really interesting to find out all about them and what they do in the winter.
Glow Blogs
Last week Mr Renwick came to our class. He taught us how to set up our own eportfolios on Glow. We all have 3 posts each already!
We have all added tiles to our launch pad so we can get to them quickly.
We really enjoyed doing it and are looking forward to adding to our eportfolios through the year.
New School Year
Welcome to a new school year in the P2/3 classroom!
This term we have been doing Fairyland as a topic. We have been very busy turning our classroom into Fairyland!
We had a visit from a Dragon who left us a letter asking us to turn the classroom into Fairyland because the real Fairyland was disappearing and the Dragon was worried that none of his fairyland friends would have anywhere to live. So far, we have made a giant beanstalk, Jack, magic beans, a cow, a castle and a giant! We have also made dragon masks and Hansel & Gretel sweetie houses.
We have also made a dragon based on what we think our visiting dragon looks like.
We have been reading lots of Fairytales and have really enjoyed them all.
Caterpillars
We have had caterpillars in our classroom for the last few weeks. They have gotten bigger and bigger every day. They have had special food to eat in their tub. They all climbed to the top and hung in a hook shape. The caterpillars are now all in their cocoons! We hope that the butterflies come out of their cocoons before the holidays!
Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt
Two weeks ago we mummified tomatoes. We had been learning about how Ancient Egyptians mummified the bodies of the Pharaohs. We decided to mummify tomatoes to see how it worked.
First we cut a hole in the tomato, then we scooped out all the seeds. We cleaned our tomatoes inside and out with an anti bacterial wipe to wipe away any bacteria that was on the tomato. We then filled the tomatoes with a mixture of salt and bicarbonate of soda (natron) and put the tomatoes in a tub and poured the rest of the mixture over it. Â We kept two control tomatoes as well.
We left them for two weeks to see what would happen!
The tomatoes left in the mixture had shrivelled up and all the moisture had been taken out of them. The skin was no longer smooth, it was very wrinkly. There was no mould on any of our tomatoes but there was mould on the control one.
The tomatoes smelt horrible after being in the mixture!
We all enjoyed taking part in the experiment!
