Weather Project

This term we have been learning about weather and climate. We have learnt about the weather in our area and the affect the weather has on what we do and what we wear. We put out a rain gauge and thermometer and kept a weather diary to see if we could spot any weather patterns. We made sure we went outside every Wednesday, whatever the weather, to see what the weather was like and found it interesting to see the changes in the weather each week.

We learnt about the 4 seasons and the types of weather in each season. We enjoyed writing our own weather forecasts and even made videos of us all presenting our forecasts, which was fun to do. The best part of this project was going on a trip to the Lerwick Weather Observatory. We walked with P3b to the observatory and watched as the weather balloon was prepared and then released. We were able to find out what the balloon does and how the observatory receives the data.

School Value – Safety

Our school value this term is safety. P3a learnt about firework/fire safety before bonfire night and created colourful pictures. We have also been looking at how we keep ourselves safe from illness. We have learnt why it is important to keep our hands clean and when we should wash our hands. We have also learnt the 7 stages of good handwashing and now follow these steps daily to keep any germs on our hands from spreading.

Outdoor Learning

Our weather project this term has meant that we have spent lots of time outside recording the weather, which has been great. We enjoyed getting out every Wednesday and taking a photo at the same spot to note any differences in the weather and the skies.

We always enjoy some time in the adventure playground and multi-court, remembering to keep safe while we play!

Numeracy Week

During Numeracy Week, we invited parents in to talk to us about how they use maths in their jobs and throughout the week we completed extra maths activities. We also took part in a whole school STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) challenge – ‘Chaos at the North Pole’. Our challenge involved creating a safe way for our Elf to get off the shelf! We had lots of fun doing this.

At the end of the week, we invited all parents and carers into class to play some maths games. This was a busy week, which everyone enjoyed.

Something Went Bump!

This term we have been continuing to develop our knowledge and understanding of pulse, rhythm and pitch through rhymes, action games and singing games. We’ve been exploring different ways to keep a steady beat and in the video, you can see 2A using buckets as untuned percussion. This performance is of a song called ‘Something Went Bump’ by Elementary Music Fun.

Art Lesson

In art P3 have been exploring lots of different materials when creating different weather images.

There were 9 weather stations set up in the room and P3 have been “artistic explorers”.  Their job was to move between stations choosing, trying and combining lots of different materials to see what effects they could create.

They have all really enjoyed this and created a lovely collection of pictures which show their growing understanding of the materials.

Well done primary 3 🙂

Shetland Project

This term we have been learning about Shetland with a focus on mapping and land use. We looked at the map of Shetland and enjoyed painting our own map of Shetland to help us see where all the islands are situated. To help us identify the shape of Shetland, we completed Shetland jigsaws, which were really quite tricky! We used a map of the school when we went for a walk around the school and even made a map of the classroom.

We used the tablets during our ICT time to research facts about some of the islands around Shetland and worked in pairs to complete fact files.

During maths time, we completed work on grid references and we all enjoyed making grid reference pictures; this was one of our favourite activities.

We had great discussions on land use around Shetland and we compiled lists of land use in and around Lerwick with everyone keen to contribute with their favourite shop or play park!

To end the topic everyone presented an individual talk on ‘My favourite Place in Shetland’. We started by writing a story about our favourite places in Shetland then used this to make notes for our talks. With a range of presenting styles including the use of PowerPoint, posters, photographs, drawing and notes we all enjoyed finding out about different places in Shetland.

Everyone has enjoyed this topic and made such good progress with map skills as well as improving their presenting skills. Well done everyone!
