Outdoor Learning

This term we have been learning about Meta – Skills and all the different ways that we learn. As we take part in more outdoor learning, we aim to match what we are doing to the meta-skills detailed in the poster below.

We have enjoyed Outdoor Learning with P1; we went for a walk around the local area and had a fantastic trip to the Sands of Sound beach. At the beach we worked together to build dams.

On each trip, we were learning the skills of focusing, collaboration, communication and critical thinking.

Pupil comments:

Focusing – We were determined to make a perfect dam and I even went in the water with my best shoes on.

Collaboration – We were working with P1s to build a dam. I liked going for a walk and being partnered with my sister.

Communication – We had to talk to each other to move the log into the stream. I enjoyed being with my cousin on the walk.

Critical thinking – We had to think about the amount of stuff like stones, seaweed and sand we should use for it to work.

We have realised that we use many of these skills in our day-to-day learning and we are becoming more aware of when we use these skills.

This term, in numeracy we have been learning more about money; how to count coin collections and how to calculate change. We enjoyed a super afternoon in the wildlife area when we used our money skills to ‘buy’ items from the ‘Sparks and Feather Nature Shop’ to make our own potions. Everyone really enjoyed our time outside.

Pupil comments:

I enjoyed getting all the resources to make £2 exactly.

Some of the class were shocked to see a chicken in the wildlife area!

We liked adding up to see if we got over £2 or under.

When we were making the potions it was messy with the mud.

I liked collecting the things from the price list.
