Walk to the North Voe

After playtime we walked down to the North Voe beach. We built stone towers and sculptures with the rocks on the shore and found some interesting items!

Everyone chose a stone to take back to class. It had to be big enough to decorate, but small enough to carry by ourselves. In the afternoon, everyone enjoyed taking the time to decorate our stones and talk about our busy day.

Trip to Brough Beach

Here are some pictures form the trip to Brough. We took part in a beach clean and collected a full black bag of plastic from the beach. Then we had three activities on the beach; beach art, sandcastles and a treasure hunt. The children also enjoyed time to throw in stones and have a paddle. It was great fun!

Our Senses Activities

This week we have been looking at listening and hearing. The class have made individual musical instruments and yesterday we took part in a musical painting activity to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. It was really interesting as the children could talk about which instruments were in their paintings and whether the music was fast, slow, loud or quiet. Some of the children chose to paint with their eyes closed and ‘feel’ the music.

A Busy Term

It has been a busy term so far in Primary 1 and 2.  Children ask for pictures to be taken of things they are proud of to share on the blog. Here are some pictures of play activities that children have asked to be taken so far this term.

Welcome Back

It has been a busy week in P1/2, we have been busy settling in and catching up with our friends.

This week we have been learning about spring and we have been looking for signs of spring in our local environment. On Wednesday we went for a walk and in our groups used a checklist to spot different signs of spring. Everyone was excited when we saw a new lamb! Back in the class we used our experience to write and draw about what we saw.

We have also been learning about area and using loose parts to work calculate, compare and contrast different areas.  We were surprised that different shapes can sometimes have the same area. I was impressed how well the children worked together, co-operating to take turns and discuss their answers.

A Busy Time

We have had a brilliant week back at school. It is great to see everyone and I can’t quite believe how much the bairns have grown since December. IT has been a busy week settling back into the routines of the school day and learning some new ones too. Here are some pictures of the class on Tuesday.

On Friday, we were working on position and movement; turning left and right and moving froward and backwards. We had four activities;

  • BeeBot, where the children had to direct BeeBot to the correct building by keying in directions.
  • Coding using the Kodable website, where children had to move their character through the mazes and create their own maze. It was an excellent way to include coding in early years and practice directions.
  • Colouring activity
  • Outdoor paired activity where children had to direct their partner to find the treasure.

The children used their thumbs to assess their confidence at the beginning and end of the lesson and all agreed they were more confident using directions and remembering which way was left and right.
