First Week Back!

It has been so lovely to have everyone back in class this week after the holidays! We have been very busy this week so far.

We finally got a whole class photo with everyone being in school!

We have set up new toys and adapted our play areas, including adding some Halloween colouring and sensory play!

We wrote about our news from the holidays and did some creative writing about Halloween! We also did a drawing club making Halloween monsters. What a busy week!

Harvest Service at the Kirk

P1/2 visited the Kirk on Monday for the Harvest service. The pupils were quick to notice lots of food displayed in the kirk! Helen Cruddis discussed harvest time with the pupils and read them the story of The Harvest Mouse.

The pupils made beautiful crafts to display in the kirk of some of their favourite fruit and vegetables. The pupils also did some writing about the foods that they are thankful for.

We all really enjoyed our morning out! Thank you to Helen for having us!

Literacy

This term we have been very busy with our literacy.

P1 have been learning their phonics sounds. They have been doing a great job and practicing their formations using various materials in the classroom.

P1 have also done a lot of literacy through their play! Our message centre has been very busy with mark-making, writing and reading.

P2 have been very busy doing reading, spelling, writing and grammar. We have been looking at sentences this term and P2 have had lots of practice writing and ordering sentences. We have been making up “silly sentences” to encourage the pupils to write for fun and in their play to improve their confidence in writing. We have had many great story ideas from the pupils. We have also been setting targets with their news writing to help them keep improving the quality of their writing.

P2 have also been practicing their capital letter formations and blending their sounds

.

The Zoo

P1/2 chose the zoo as our class topic for this term. The zoo corner is a very popular play area in our classroom so we looked at how we could develop this area and learn more about the zoo.

We began by adding some “mountains” to the animals’ enclosures using materials around the classroom.

Then we made a grand entrance to our zoo using some of our numeracy resources!

We also used the blocks to keep the animals in their enclosures.

We made lots of artwork inspired by our zoo topic. We made a display above our zoo corner. We also read stories about the zoo and learned lots of zoo animals. We also did writing about our favourite zoo animals, bringing literacy into our play.

We discussed our key questions and wrote them in the floorbook to focus what we wanted to learn about the zoo for our topic. Now at the end of term, we have been reflecting on what we have learned and what we enjoyed!
