We had a visit from the Scalloway Fire Station this week. We learnt about all the different apperatus used in the event of a fire. We all found it really interesting and we especially enjoyed pressing the button for the siren and having a shot of the hose! We all got soaked!

Book Week
We were lucky enough to see two authors last week during book week. We went on a trip to the museum to see Shoo Rayner, author of the Vik the Viking books and we also had a visit from Debi Gliori. We heard a little bit about what inspired them to write some of their books before they read us a story.
We also learnt how to draw a Viking and a penguin!
All the pupils really enjoyed our visits and liked listening to the stories!
Under the Sea Opera
Andy Ross came in to our class for 5 weeks over this term. All we had was the title to start off with. We had to discuss what the beginning of our story would be.
We started by drawing parts of the story on a long sheet of wallpaper. We were all in different groups and we got to decide what happened in our section of the story. We drew pictures and also wrote what was happening.
In our story, people went out fishing on their boat and decided to do a conga! The boat capsized and everyone realised that they could breathe under the water! They found an underwater city called Atlantis and it was magic! They were sad to leave Atlantis but had to go back to their families. They got caught in a fishing net when they tried to go home but were too heavy so the boat capsized. They had to swim home and never went back to Atlantis again!
We used a lot of instruments for our Opera and we all got to try lots of different percussion instruments.
We really enjoyed it and hope to upload a video of our performance soon!
French
Bonjour!
We have been learning some French in our class. The primary 5’s from the P567 class joined us for a session.
We have been learning how to say ‘hello’ and ‘how are you?’.
In French you would say ‘Bonjour’ and ‘Ca va?’.
We have also learnt how to play Heads Down, Thumbs Up in French and we are slowly learning all the phrases.
We are really enjoying it!
Tesco – Farm to Fork
We went on a trip to Tesco, it was called Farm to Fork. First we met a lady called Mandy who told us what we would be doing. We had a look around the fruit and veg aisle and then had to write down a fruit and vegetable for every colour of the rainbow. We also had a look at the cheese counter and had to remember the different cheeses that we were going to try. We tried 5 counties cheese which had Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Derby, Somerset Cheddar and Cheshire in it and we also got to try Edam. We also got to make our own wraps and had a lot of different ingredients to try. We got to try a frittata that had goats cheese and cheddar in it. Some of us enjoyed it but lots of us didn’t.
We had a really good time at Tesco and we would love to go again!
Generation Science
We had a visit from Generation Science. It was a performance based on reducing waste, recycling and re-using. We learnt about where different things come from for example, plastic, metal and wood. The play showed us how we could stop these things from running out in the future.
Drama
Izzy Swanson has been coming in to the class to do some drama with us. We have been playing different games. In one game we had to create a picture using actions. One person had to leave the room and try and guess what picture we had made by asking us questions. We also learnt that using different tones of voice and expression could change the way a sentence was said.
We are really enjoying Izzy coming in to our class!
Northlink
We went to visit Northlink this week. We were lucky enough to get a tour on the Hjaltland by a lady called Jane. First we had our snack in the terminal, then we went on the boat. Just before we went on the boat we had to learn the rules:

We walked through the walkway and met Malcolm and Martin at reception. We saw the viking at reception called Magnus and then we went up the stairs. We met Caroline at the shop, they sell a lot of local produce and then we went to the bow of the ship and walked through the sleeping pod area to the cinema. Jane took questions here before we went through the galley. We walked out one door, saw the poop deck and walked back in another. Then we went up to the bridge. We met the captain, Peter Hilbert, and he showed us around. We found out that they use a paintbrush to dust! Ashleigh, Danny and Rebekah became captains for a short time!
We really enjoyed our trip and loved the pencils and rubbers that we were given at the end . 
Shelter Box
On Thursday we had a visit from Dennis and Andrew from The Rotary club. They were telling us all about Shelter Boxes. These boxes get sent to countries that are less fortunate than us. Quite often these countries have had natural disasters or man made disasters such as civil wars. Families can lose their homes for lots of reasons, sometimes they have to leave their homes and other times their homes might be destroyed.
The shelter boxes have everything they need to survive. Some of the items in the box are: A tent that sleeps 12, tools, pots and pans, a stove, scarf and gloves if it’s a cold country, rope, sleeping bags, water bottles, tablets to decontaminate the water and colouring pencils and paper.
It was very interesting to find out all about the boxes and what the are for.
SSPCA
Inspector Sales from the SSPCA came in to visit us yesterday. SSPCA stands for Scottish Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She came in to speak to us about animal cruelty and how people should be looking after their animals. She told us what would happen if someone didn’t treat their animals or pets right. If the SSPCA were called about someone not treating their animals well they could be fined, go to jail and be stopped from keeping any animals for a certain length of time.
At the end we got to play a game. In the game we had to answer questions to move our animals around the board. They were True or False questions all about animals.
We really enjoyed playing the game and we also got pencils, stickers, a magnet and a sticker for a window.
It was a very interesting visit!
