The Letter ‘t’

Primary 1 have been learning the letter ‘t’.  They have been busy making tigers and turtles today.  They have also been working on letter formation and they have learned how to spell the words ‘sat’.  Some have been busy sorting objects at the alliteration station.  They had to decide if the object begins with the letter ‘s’ or the letter ‘a’.

Scratch Jr

On Monday afternoon Mr Renwick and two S4 pupils from Sandwick Junior High School came to introduce Primary 2 to a computer programming game called ‘Scratch Jr’.  The game is an app on the i-Pad which you can download for free.  The children learned how to type in code to get their Sprite to move and how to add new backgrounds to their programme.  The game is great for teaching so many skills including directional language, number, prediction, team work, creativity, computer programming, resilience and many more!

Letter ‘s’

Primary 1 started learning their first phonics this week. On Monday and Tuesday we were learning about the pure ‘s’ sound. We practised writing the letter s on whiteboards, in sand trays and outside with chalk on the ground and wall. Primary 1 thought of lots of words which begin with the letter ‘s’. We designed our own snake pattern and cut it out. This activity helps to improve our pencil control and scissor skills.

What a busy week!

What a fun week of learning in Primary 1/2!  Lots of opportunities for learning through play.

P2 are very proud of their construction of a city.  They even used the letters from a jigsaw as loose parts to help their model.  We are learning about 2D and 3D shapes this term so there has been lots of opportunity to talk about shape through play.  Look how creative everyone has been! 🙂

Day 2!

We have had another great day in P1/2 today.  We had a fire drill first thing this morning.  Everyone did so well walking out of the building safely and making their way to the multicourt.  Well done everyone!

After, we spent time playing in the classroom.  Lots of skills being developed through play.

After break, we drew pictures of our first day at school and wrote about them.  We enjoyed looking at the photos which were taken at school yesterday.

In the afternoon P2 practised their ICT skills again.  Everyone managed to type their name lots of times using a different font, colour and size!

First Day of Term

What a super day welcoming the new Primary 1/2 class at Hamnavoe Primary School!

We spent all morning playing!  Everyone enjoyed discovery learning and have shown great team working skills.  It was great to see everyone being so creative in their play and learning too.

After snack we talked about out Summer holidays with our talking partners.  Some were brave enough to stand up in front of the whole class and tell their news.  We then had a go at drawing a picture and writing about our holidays.  Primary 1 are developing their pre-writing and reading skills by mark making and talking about their work.  Primary 2 worked independently and produced brilliant work!

Lunchtime was a great success as everyone enjoyed their sausages and waffles.  Primary 1 were encouraged to use their fork to eat with instead of their hands.  Everyone was encouraged to cut up their waffle and sausage with their fork and knife.  I think everyone was hungry after their busy day as lots of children went up for seconds!

Primary 1 children went home at 1.30pm which left a smaller class of just Primary 2 children.  We spent the afternoon learning about how to use Microsoft Word on a laptop.  We tried changing the font, colour and size of text.

We are looking forward to another fun filled day tomorrow!

P1&2 Class Trip

On Wednesday 20th June Primary 1 & 2 went on a class trip to Sand Gairdins and Michaelswood.  We had a wonderful day of outdoor exploring and playing with friends.  We were lucky to see the sunshine and although it did rain for a little while, we had great fun sheltering under the trees in Michaelswood.  Thanks to the parent helpers who came along with us.

P1 New Starts

We welcomed the P1 new starts to Primary 1/2 again this morning.  Today they were dropped off at school by their Mum’s or Dad’s, one even came to school on the bus!  They all settled in very quickly and enjoyed spending time playing in class.  The current Primary 1’s were fantastic friends and helped the new P1’s buy their tuck and get ready for playtime.  We hope they are looking forward to coming to school again next Friday for moving up day.  They will stay for snack and lunch on Friday 22nd June.  The menu for that day is sausages and mashed tatties followed by ice-cream.
