Exploring Forces

This afternoon Primary 1 & 2 learned about the forces ‘push’ and ‘pull’.  In groups, they had to decide which toys and objects required the push or pull force to move.  They discovered some things required both a push and pull force.  The class then had to categorise the items.  The next activity was to look around the classroom and find toys and objects which moved when you applied a push or pull force.  They enjoyed playing and talking about which force they were applying.

Have a look at the photos and think about which force you think is being applied.

P1 Fine Motor Skills

Today Primary 1 were using their fine motor skills to make patterns on peg boards.  They then used their fine motor skills again in maths.  They had to count out the correct number of counters into egg boxes and had to add the correct number of pegs to the dot cards.

Show and Tell

Our topic this term is ‘Toys’, therefore the theme for our class Show and Tell is ‘My Favourite Toy’.  Today 3 Primary 2’s had the chance to share information about their favourite toy with the class.  Check your child’s homework diary to find out the date of their Show and Tell.

P1’s First Full Day!

Today P1 stayed at school for their first full day!  What a busy day it has been.

In the morning we spent time with our talking partners and small groups discussing yesterdays class trip.  Everyone was working on taking turns to talk and giving eye-contact.

Next, everyone wrote about the class trip and drew a picture.

After snack, P1 learned about the sound ‘i’ and then practised counting.  P2 did some great work on counting in 2’s and working out odd and even numbers.  Before lunch P1/2 relaxed and spent time looking at books.  Some children read stories to the teddies.

In the afternoon, we went to the library and had our first whole class gym session outside.  Everyone had fun playing counting catchie games.  To finish off the day, we had fun outside with bubbles!

Kids Who Code

This afternoon Primary 2 continued working on their computer programming skills.  They tinkered with Scratch Junior for a while and then were introduced to ‘Kodable’.  Both games involved a lot of problem solving, communication and team work with others, navigation and number skills, sequencing, prediction, vocabulary, ability to identify ‘bugs’ in code and work out how to ‘de-bug’ them and much more!  Primary 2’s have been enjoying their coding sessions and developing their digital literacy skills.

P1/2 Class Trip Out! Screen-Play & Museum

Today Primary 1 & 2 went to Lerwick for a class trip.

First, we went to Mareel to watch ‘Shorts for Wee Ones’ as part of Screen-Play week.  We watched 8 mini animations. We thought they were all great.  There were lots of really funny parts!  The majority of the class liked the singing pigs the best.

After the cinema, we went to the Learning Room at the Shetland Museum for snack.  Next, we split into groups and had a look around the museum.  We had great fun playing with the toys from the past and dressing up.  We will be learning more about toys this term.

Thanks to all the parent helpers who came on our trip, Leasks Bus Company, Shetland Arts, Noelle Henderson and the Shetland Museum.  We had a really great time!
