Da Ooricks

This week everyone in Hamnavoe Primary School has been learning Shetland Dialect.

P1/2 invited the author of the book ‘Da Ooricks’ into the school. ‘Da Ooricks’ is written in rhyme and in Shetland Dialect by Ann-Marie Anderson. Ann-Marie read the class the book and spoke about what some of the Shetland words mean. Everyone then made an Oorick using ‘oo ‘ (wool) for their beards and fair isle pattern for their hats. We made a beautiful and very coulourful display.

After reading ‘Da Ooricks’, the class were inspired to write their own story about Ooricks in Shetland Dialect! We had a lot of fun with this!

Primary 1/2 would like to thank Ann-Marie for coming to share her book with the class and also inspiring creative art and story writing.
