As part of our journey towards becoming a Rights Respecting School<\/strong>, we explored the ABCDE of Children’s Rights<\/strong>.\u00a0 Through this process, the children now understand that their rights are always there no matter what (unconditional)<\/strong> and that they apply to every child without discrimination (universal)<\/strong>. We made a classroom display to remind us.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Our next step was to develop a charter<\/strong> for our school\/class.\u00a0 We started by exploring the UNCRC (Convention or Rights for Children) articles to decide what rights felt most relevant within our school environment.\u00a0 Through discussion, debating and voting, the children agreed to incorporate 4 rights:<\/p>\n

Article 12\u00a0 –\u00a0 Respect for Children’s Views – <\/strong>Our children’s views will be sought on all matters concerning them.\u00a0 Their views will be taken seriously and considered.<\/p>\n

Article 13 –\u00a0 Freedom of Expression – <\/strong>Our children have the right to share their views and opinions freely.<\/p>\n

Article 29\u00a0 – Aims of Education – <\/strong>Education should develop the personality,\u00a0 talents and abilities of all our pupils.<\/p>\n

Article 31\u00a0 – Rest, play, culture, arts – <\/strong>Our children have the right to play and rest.<\/p>\n

We then explored each of our chosen articles in turn to agree on actions <\/strong>for pupils<\/strong> and adults<\/strong> to uphold within each right.\u00a0 Together, we decided on a display to represent our Charter.\u00a0 The petals on the flowers are our 4 chosen rights.\u00a0 The leaves on the left are pupil (Duty Holders) actions<\/strong> and the leaves on the right are adult (Duty Bearers)<\/strong> actions<\/strong>.\u00a0 The roots represent the pupils and adults in our school community.<\/p>\n

We included Article 12<\/strong>\u00a0 in our charter which is one of 4 Guiding Principles<\/strong> of the CRC.\u00a0 We wanted to include the other 3 other in some way too so Article 2 (Anti-discrimination)<\/strong> is the rain, Article 3 (Best interests of the child)<\/strong> is the sun and Article 6 (Life, Survival and Development)<\/strong> is the soil.<\/p>\n

Our final task was to ask every pupil and staff member to agree and sign our Charter to show our commitment to uphold it.<\/p>\n
