At the end of term, we said a very heartfelt goodbye to Hollie (or “Queen Hollie” as she has become known as at Fair Isle Primary School). Hollie and her family have lived in Fair Isle for twenty seven years, starting off running the Bird Observatory before becoming a crofter along with her husband, Deryk. They have four grown-up children, all of whom attended the primary school.

For the last fifteen years, Hollie has worked at Fair Isle Primary School in a variety of roles, most recently as our Early Years Practitioner in the nursery along with being Lunchtime Supervisor, as well as coming with us on the P1-P7 enrichment trips. She has very much been an unsung hero, so it was nice to sing her praises at a special “leavers assembly” just for her. The children of the school prepared their favourite memories, performed a very funny sketch and made some beautiful cards as staff and family joined us in school. There was also a video, which featured virtual message from staff members of the past who Hollie has worked alongside and a message from our friends in Foula.

Even though Hollie is only moving to mainland Shetland, and we will see her again in the not-too-distant future, we are still going to miss her immeasurably. We hope you’ll always keep your crown!
