On Thursday 14th June, Mr Rose came to do a huge demonstration of the circulatory system. Ā He out a huge outline of a heart on the hall floor and we were all blood cells travelling through the body!
On Wednesday 6th June, we had a really interesting morning walking to different places in Boddam Voe and then listening to people sharing their memories of the history of the local area. Back at school we heard a bit more about local schools in the past and Shetland in WWII.
On Monday 4th June, we had a very exciting day at Sandwick, working with some of the Sandwick and Cunningsburgh primary classes to perform The Dragon of the Western Sea.
We met in the games hall first to run through all the singing, with a bit of acting, then we separated off to polish our performances. After lunch we had a dress rehearsal and then at 2pm, the performance in front of an audience of school bairns, family and friends. It is amazing how quickly the final polished performance was put together and we were very pleased with how well our bairns did. What a fantastic day.
We have been planting seeds for wildlife. The flowers will be food for lots of insects and animals. We have been making recycled newspaper pots for the seedlings. They are growing so fast. Everyone has been taking a turn to water them š
On 21st May we spent the morning at Sandwick practising for our next Scottish Opera performance. It sounded fantastic!
On 17th May we all went down to the Voe to look at all the plants growing there. We spotted lots of different species and then spent a while rock pooling.
On Thursday 17th May, Primary 5/6 had a great morning planting up a new area of the school grounds with the Woodlands Trust trees that we received last autumn. The grass was strimmed and John made planting holes to put the saplings into. After a quick demonstrationĀ the children soon learnt how to bed the trees in and by break time we had a whole new forest planted up. We can’t wait to see how they grow.
This afternoon Primary 5/6 and some of Primary 6/7 went to visit the dig at Broo. Gerry Bigalow, the project coordinator met us and gave us a really interesting talk all about the house site. Every year they find something different and reveal more of the house. This year they have uncovered a huge fireplace and a window that hasnāt been looked through for 300 years!
After the talk and walk around the site we split into two groups and had a chance to do some real hands on archaeology. We used the large hanging sieve to look through buckets of the sandy earth from the site and it was exciting to see how many things we found. There were lots of bones and some burnt peat.
The second activity was to use the trowels to scrape back the soil and look for artefacts. This time there were again quite a few bones and the remains of a very old bottle.
We were lucky with the weather and really enjoyed the walk there and back too. Primary 5/6 gave the afternoon 10/10!
Thanks to Faith and Robertās mums for coming with us too.
On Wednesday 2nd May Angela Hopwood came into class to talk about the importance of healthy eating on our bodies. She brought some activities for us to complete too.
