It is almost time!  My favourite day of the whole school year fast approaches.

This year we have decided to immerse ourselves in all things Viking for a week!  SMUHA is such an important community event that we felt that dedicating all our learning for the week was a fitting way to ensure the bairns maintain their enthusiasm.  They are the future of the festival after all!

This year we have gone all out!  We have our usual P7 Jarl Squad.  Their preparations are well underway but being kept top secret!  There are 3 other squads from P5 and P6 who will be entertaining us on the day. The galley is ready and I have to say she is looking great – well done John and galley boy Kempie!  We have an enterprise team who will be producing key rings, a programme and home bakes for sale on SMUHA day. We will split the proceeds of our enterprise venture between school funds and SMUHA.

We have the following timetabled events but many other activities are happening during the week.  If you would like to help with any craft, story writing, supporting enterprise groups or assisting our squads, please get in touch.  We would love to have your input.  It is a fantastic community event and we would be delighted if you would like to join us.

Monday:  Shetland Dancing for all primary classes.  Visit from Jarl, Liam Mullay to see our P7 Jarl squad.

Wednesday:  Shetland Museum Outreach visiting.  All primary classes will have a session.

Thursday:  Mr Stephen Renwick and Mrs Esther Renwick will both be visiting to talk Viking and demonstrate some archaeology.

“Dunrossness had one team entered into the Primary Netball League and were put into the South League. Originally we were scheduled to have one session in December (cancelled due to school shutting) and the other in January (cancelled due to weather). However, our team completely stepped up to the plate and competed on Thursday 14th and Monday 18th February.

On the 14th, we played in Sandwick against Cunningsburgh, losing 8-1, and Hamnavoe, winning 4-0. Coach Ruth believes it was just nerves showing against the tall P7 team from Cunningsburgh. Well done to come back from a defeat to win the second match! There was great play from everyone in both of those matches, particularly Becca, Carla, Hannah and Alex. Then there was time for some fun games with the three teams mixed up, which allowed everyone to play with different people and in different positions.

On the 18th, we played in Scalloway against Whiteness, losing 3-2, Scalloway, winning 3-2, and Sound Blue, losing 6-0. Again, the team just struggled against the height of the Sound Blue team, but did so well in the other two matches. The coaches were really impressed with the versatility of our players this day, with special mention to Ruby as Goal Keeper.

The standard of play showed the potential in this young team for next year!

Whiteness and Sound Blue move on to the finals, coming first and second in our league. However, Dunrossness came equal third and we are absolutely delighted!”

Christmas Play Postponement

We have taken the decision to postpone our Christmas Performances until January.  Our tentative date is the Thursday 17th January at 6.30pm.

We have not taken the decision lightly but we want to minimise risk of any illnesses spreading and ruining Christmas.  A warm hall full of people would be a perfect breeding ground!

We do hope you will come and watch the bairns perform in January.  Although the festivities will be over, the children and teachers have put a lot of effort in to producing this show!

Thank you for understanding,

Best wishes for a healthy and happy festive!

Christmas Jumper Day

On Friday 14th it is Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day.  We are taking part in Dunrossness School.  Please encourage your child to wear their Christmas Jumpers and make a small donation to the appeal.  We suggest 50p.

The staff will also donate to wear their festive jumpers.  This year we will also donate our collection from the staff Secret Santa and Fruity Friday profits for that day.

Thanks for your support.
