New Primary 1 visit

We were excited to welcome the new primary 1 class again for another visit. They had a play and had a wee taste of what “targets” would look like when they move into primary 1.

Outdoor maths

We took some different rubbings of patterns from our outside environment. Paper often gets wet so we used tin foil. We then had to guess where the patterns had been take.

We created some staircase number lines… we thought it was going to be easy but the Shetland wind did not help.

Outdoor Maths

Today we did our maths outside.

We did a hand-sized scavenger hunt – I set up a scavenger hunt for the class where they had to find objects of certain sizes. They drew around their own hand then had to find the objects, comparing to their own hand.
A stick smaller than my hand
A blade of grass longer than my little finger
A leaf as wide at my hand span
A stone that fits inside my hand
A daisy the same size as my thumb

We then did some work on Carroll diagrams.

Carroll diagrams involve sorting objects according to defined attributes based upon what objects are and are not. It begins with discrete sets where there is no overlap. We began with two sets: what something is and what it is not. We extended this to a 2 x 2 Carroll diagram by the addition of an extra row.

When we were at the park today, the children were asked to use the equipment in lots of different ways. We were focusing on positional language.

You are at the top of the slide
Here you are sliding down
Now you are spinning around on the disc
Do you remember rocking backwards and forward?
I see you hiding underneath the slide.

A busy morning of maths… but a fun one at that! 🙂

The bairns wanted a surprise as their class trip… they didn’t even want to know when we were on the bus. Their knowledge between Cunningsburgh and Burra was very impressive!! Some very excited bairns when we reached Burra (some had been there… some had never been there!) They had a great fun learning about all the different animals!

We then headed to Scalloway School for wir denner! Thank you to Cunningsburgh canteen staff for making wir packed lunches… and thank you to Scalloway canteen staff for having us (and clearing up wir mess… we REALLY appreciated it!)

Then we had time for a VERY quick play at the play park!

A special thanks to Moira (parent helper) and John (bus driver) for helping wis on wir day!

ELC visits P1/2 – Transition

We were delighted to welcome the bairns from the ELC to join in with some transition activities. The whole class were super stars where the older bairns helped to show them around and the new ones who were super keen to join in. We got them stuck straight into Drawing Club and I couldn’t believe how great the pictures were! Then we had a little play before the bairns went back to ELC.

Bev from Salvation Army visits P1/2

The big question this week is all about the main values of Christianity. A parent suggested Bev from Salvation Army and we were delighted to welcome her in the class this afternoon. Bev had a bag full of visuals to share some of the values of Christianity including love, generosity and kindness. Thank you for coming in – the bairns (and staff) enjoyed your visit!

Welcome Everybody Song

Primary 1 and 2 love to begin their music lesson with Mrs Pottinger by singing ‘Welcome Everybody’ which was written by Fischy Music. They have learnt all the signs for it and sing it with lots of enthusiasm. This song brings a smile to everyone who hears them singing it!
