The bairns have been interested in using the computers in the office to type letters and stories.  This gave us the idea to create an office in the quiet room using the smartboard.  The bairns have typed, changed the colour of their font and have been getting to grips with the mouse control.

The workbench is always a creative space and this week was no exception.  In small groups we are introducing a new tool to the workbench area – a Japanese pull saw.  This tool is recommended by early years woodwork specialists.  The fine teeth enable easy sawing and the Japanese pull type handle means that the bairns can put both hands on the handle for extra control and grip.  The bairns listened to the rules for the new tool and built up their confidence, soon mastering it’s technique.  The projects that followed included a cupcake and a cat.

Childsmile came back to visit this week to check up on how the staff were getting on with their toothbrushing!  The bairns listened to the instructions, picking out their own toothbrush and giving their pearly whites the once over.

Jumpstart January continued this week with a whole setting game of the floor is lava using lots of cushions and rugs.  The bairns moved around the setting, listening to the instructions and helping their friends get to a safe place away from the lava.  We also joined the minions for a freeze dance session.  When we ventured to the multi-court (“look how big it is!”), the bairns kicked balls, played catch and stepped on the white lines like a tightrope.  The bairns asked to do yoga again and we found a Cosmic Kids video explaining the Chinese calendar and how the animals were chosen.  The bairns listened to the story and tried out the positions.  To end the week we had a musical march around the setting and more Just Dance fun.  Keep your fingers crossed that we win!

The Glasgow Science Centre visited the school this week, bringing along lots of exciting things to see and do.  The bairns were shown each station and then it was their chance to have a go.  The favourites were the control centre game, breathing simulator, skin simulator, thermal camera, x-ray machine and organ drop game.

The bairns often use the mat as a stage for dancing but this week they were interested in jumping.  We looked out our trusty roll of masking tape and made a hopscotch grid.  The bairns have tested out different ways of jumping through the numbers, who can jump really fast and taking turns in the queue.

We continued our Jumpstart January with ballet, Simon Says,  balance bikes and circuits.  The bairns noticed their heart rates increasing with every move and many needed to grab their water bottle after exercising “I’m thirsty after dat!”.

Following holiday role play initiated by the bairns, a plane was set up in the nursery heading to exotic locations such as Aberdeen, Dundee and Tenerife!  The bairns packed their suitcases and got their holiday attire ready.  When they were ready to board the flight, the attendant made sure to stamp everyone’s passports and check their tickets.  We also watched the process of boarding a real flight and saw the plane flying through the clouds.

We were delighted to have the bairns back after the Christmas break and hear all their exciting news.  Some of the bairns were keen to speak about things they had received for Christmas and decided to put on a Show and Tell.  The bairns listened to each of their friends, while taking turns to tell us about their own item.

The nursery is taking part in Jumpstart January which means we move our bodies for 15 minutes every day.  So far we have done this by playing the floor is lava, musical statues, king kong conga, ball play, yoga, Just Dance Kids and Joe Wicks Superheroes workout (“That was crazy!”).   The bairns have come up with their own ideas for each day and everyone has got involved.

We welcomed Mrs Garrick back for our first music lesson of the year this week.  The lesson started with a new song King Kong Conga which meant that the bairns could move around the hall in the conga style.  This provided opportunities for listening, movement, singing and being careful with the person in front.  Next we had a request from the bairns for the Wheels on the Bus.  This was paired up with actions for the wheels, wipers, horn, babies, mummies and people.  Then it was time to learn the Up Helly Aa song.  Finally, Mrs Garrick got our hearts pumping with a super fast version of heads, shoulders, knees and toes.

One of the bairns brought in their new puppy to visit the nursery.  We talked about how to care for a dog, what they like to eat and how much walking they need.  There was lots of discussion later in the day about how we can get a nursery dog!

We have added a lending library to the honesty cupboard.  You can take a book or leave a book and there is books available for all ages on a variety of topics.  We have a small red notebook and pencil in the box too and would be grateful if you could note your initials and the date when you take a book so we can see how many visitors there has been.  There is no hurry to return any of the books.  Happy reading!
