Term 2 Week 5 – Design Challenge

Design is a marriage between style and function.

Last week pupils were set the challenge of creating a moodboard for a design style from a given set of different styles.  Once the moodboard was complete pupils then had to come up with 3-4 words to describe the key elements of that style.  The following week their III challenge was to design a museum for the design style they had investigated.  Pupils were allowed to do this in any way they chose but all chose to draw.  You can see some of the designs below, I think they did a phenomenal job!

Term 2 Week 4 – Divide and Conquer

This week everyone has been up to really exciting things separately!

Most of the P7 group went ot Sandwick for a STEM day.  This gave them the opportunity to experience exciting STEM activities, speak to different employers in Shetland and meet other people their age who will also be moving up to high school.  The kids were just buzzing when they came back, many thanks to Sandwick for organising such a fun day and to Kay for accompanying the kids.

Meanwhile, back at school P6 had landed on an unknown plane! They had to work together in teams to draw a map of the planet, create rules for the planet that took into account the UNCRC rights we have been learning about and create solutions to problems that arose on their planets.  There were lots of opportunities to practice teamwork, communication skills, problem solving skills and compromise.

Finally, one pupil was learning all about Poppy day.  He made some Poppy Biscuits, unfortunately Mrs J only got orange food colouring so they are orange poppies!

As you can see it was a very busy but fun time for everyone.

Term 2 Week 3 – Lego Coding

This week we very lucky enough to have another visit from Emma Chittick.  We discussed space junk and the issues surrounding it.  Pupils learned about the two orbits around the earth. Then pupils created code to make the Lego robot make 3 revolutions around the earth in each robot.  Next week pupils will use the skills they have learned to address the issues of space junk.

Term 2 Week 2 – Drums Away!

On Monday this week we started preparing for one of our segments of the Christmas Concert with a drumming session.  We learned where the drums are from, the names of the different drums and the different ways to hit the drums.  We played the names game and pass the rhythm.  Finally, we started learning the first part of our piece.  Ask our pupils about the kitty-kat rhythm.

Here Comes Halloween!

We have had some Halloween fun to ease us back in after the October Break.  The pupils produced these fantastic skeleton portraits inspired by the Mexican festival ‘Day of the Dead’.  I love how individual each person’s portrait is.

P6/7 Aug 2022 – The sensible group photo
P6/7 Aug 2022 – The chaos shot!
What a busy first week it has been.  On Wednesday the pupils have created wonderful self portraits by using half of a photograph and using that to help them draw the other half of their faces back in.  On Thursday we thought about the character traits that we have and created a lovely door display using them.  Pupils also participated in a team building activity where they had to stack some cups without any part of their bodies (or clothes) touching them.  I was really impressed by how quickly they were able to think of some innovative solutions.  On Friday we wrote poems about what makes a good teacher,  learned about dinosaur fossils and made some fossil imprints.  All in all it has been a fun first week back!
