Despite this, the children settled back into school routines brilliantly and packed lots of learning into the time we had together. Here\u2019s a look at what we\u2019ve been working on across <strong data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"565\">Weeks 1 and 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"568\" data-end=\"571\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"573\" data-end=\"600\">\u270f\ufe0f Literacy &amp; Writing<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"719\">This term, our new writing focus is <strong data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"662\">Julia Donaldson texts<\/strong>, with a different book inspiring our learning each week.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"1007\">In <strong data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"734\">Week 1<\/strong>, we focused on <strong data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"785\"><em data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"783\">Charlie Cook\u2019s Favourite Book<\/em><\/strong>. The children enjoyed watching a special <strong data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"899\">video created by Mrs Teale for Shetland Arts during the Covid period<\/strong>, which brought the story to life and sparked lots of discussion about books, storytelling, and imagination.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1081\">In <strong data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1022\">Week 2<\/strong>, our focus text was <strong data-start=\"1043\" data-end=\"1066\"><em data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1064\">Room on the Broom<\/em><\/strong>. The children:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1351\">\n<li data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1161\">\n<p data-start=\"1084\" data-end=\"1161\">Took part in <strong data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1112\">hot-seating<\/strong>, questioning one of the animals from the broom<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1205\">\n<p data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1205\">Wrote from the <strong data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1203\">animal\u2019s perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1268\">\n<p data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1268\">Invented and illustrated a <strong data-start=\"1235\" data-end=\"1252\">new passenger<\/strong> for the broom<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1269\" data-end=\"1351\">\n<p data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1351\">Practised <strong data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1305\">sequencing the story<\/strong>, developing important organisational skills<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1510\">We ended the week with an exciting literacy activity \u2014 creating <strong data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1456\">exploding potions in mini cauldrons<\/strong>, linking perfectly to the magical theme of the story!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1512\" data-end=\"1539\">Across both weeks, we also:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1708\">\n<li data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1594\">\n<p data-start=\"1542\" data-end=\"1594\">Continued learning about <strong data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1592\">prefixes and suffixes<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1595\" data-end=\"1656\">\n<p data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1656\">Practised <strong data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1654\">independent reading and comprehension tasks<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1708\">\n<p data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1708\">Learned our spelling focus, the <strong data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1706\">\u2018ore\u2019 sound<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"1710\" data-end=\"1713\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1715\" data-end=\"1729\">\ud83d\udd22 Maths<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1827\">In maths, we revisited and developed our understanding of <strong data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1819\">comparing two-digit numbers<\/strong>, using:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1828\" data-end=\"1891\">\n<li data-start=\"1828\" data-end=\"1850\">\n<p data-start=\"1830\" data-end=\"1850\"><strong data-start=\"1830\" data-end=\"1850\">Greater than (&gt;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1870\">\n<p data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1870\"><strong data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1870\">Less than (&lt;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1871\" data-end=\"1891\">\n<p data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1891\"><strong data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1889\">Equal to (=)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"2068\">The children worked hard to explain their thinking and justify their answers. This learning will continue to be reinforced through games, particularly during our ICT sessions.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2073\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2075\" data-end=\"2087\">\ud83d\udcbb ICT<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2208\">We introduced a new <strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2133\">ICT slot on Thursdays<\/strong>, which will be used across the curriculum. During these sessions, we will:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2209\" data-end=\"2333\">\n<li data-start=\"2209\" data-end=\"2238\">\n<p data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2238\">Develop <strong data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2236\">typing skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2239\" data-end=\"2268\">\n<p data-start=\"2241\" data-end=\"2268\">Improve <strong data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2266\">mouse control<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2269\" data-end=\"2333\">\n<p data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2333\">Use ICT to support <strong data-start=\"2290\" data-end=\"2305\">maths games<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2333\">literacy activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2335\" data-end=\"2717\">We have also been learning about <strong data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2380\">QR codes<\/strong> and how they can be used to access information quickly and safely. As part of this, we introduced a new <strong data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2519\">classroom reading wall display<\/strong>, featuring <strong data-start=\"2531\" data-end=\"2550\">weekly QR codes<\/strong> that link directly to books and reading material. This has been a brilliant way to encourage <strong data-start=\"2644\" data-end=\"2667\">independent reading<\/strong> and build confidence in navigating digital texts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"3030\">Alongside this, we launched our new <strong data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2794\">book review and recommendation area<\/strong>. The children have been sharing their thoughts about books they\u2019ve read and recommending them to others, helping to develop important <strong data-start=\"2929\" data-end=\"2985\">evaluation, communication, and recommendation skills<\/strong> \u2014 and inspiring each other to try new texts.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3035\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3064\">\ud83d\udc96 Health &amp; Wellbeing<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3065\" data-end=\"3333\">In Health and Wellbeing, we read <strong data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3119\"><em data-start=\"3100\" data-end=\"3117\">The Magical Yet<\/em><\/strong>, exploring <strong data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3147\">goal setting<\/strong>, perseverance, and the importance of believing in ourselves. The children created thoughtful <strong data-start=\"3241\" data-end=\"3265\">goal-setting artwork<\/strong>, thinking about things they would like to work towards in <strong data-start=\"3324\" data-end=\"3332\">2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3335\" data-end=\"3594\">We also read <strong data-start=\"3348\" data-end=\"3368\"><em data-start=\"3350\" data-end=\"3366\">The Sour Grape<\/em><\/strong>, which led to some lovely discussions about being <strong data-start=\"3419\" data-end=\"3433\">\u201cgrapeful\u201d<\/strong>. The children reflected on the people, experiences, and things they feel grapeful for, sharing positive thoughts and showing great kindness towards one another.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3596\" data-end=\"3599\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3601\" data-end=\"3625\">\ud83c\udf0d Topic \u2013 Vikings<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3626\" data-end=\"3685\">We kicked off our exciting new topic on the <strong data-start=\"3670\" data-end=\"3681\">Vikings<\/strong> by:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3686\" data-end=\"3829\">\n<li data-start=\"3686\" data-end=\"3724\">\n<p data-start=\"3688\" data-end=\"3724\">Exploring <strong data-start=\"3698\" data-end=\"3722\">who the Vikings were<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3725\" data-end=\"3763\">\n<p data-start=\"3727\" data-end=\"3763\">Locating Viking lands on a <strong data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3761\">map<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3764\" data-end=\"3829\">\n<p data-start=\"3766\" data-end=\"3829\">Beginning a <strong data-start=\"3778\" data-end=\"3790\">timeline<\/strong> to understand when the Vikings lived<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3831\" data-end=\"4089\">To help bring our learning to life, the children also worked together to create a <strong data-start=\"3913\" data-end=\"3941\">Viking longship (galley)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3946\" data-end=\"3964\">Viking figures<\/strong> for our classroom wall display. These have really helped us visualise Viking life and have brightened up our learning space.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4094\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4096\" data-end=\"4130\">\ud83e\udded Cross-Curricular Learning<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4131\" data-end=\"4321\">We also explored <strong data-start=\"4148\" data-end=\"4166\">compass points<\/strong> using a fun <strong data-start=\"4179\" data-end=\"4201\">Harry Potter theme<\/strong>, helping the children practise direction skills in an engaging way that linked nicely with literacy and topic learning. We also enjoyed a fun class teacher PE session playing compass games to consolidate our learning.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4323\" data-end=\"4326\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"4328\" data-end=\"4525\">Despite the snowy start to the term, it\u2019s been a <strong data-start=\"4377\" data-end=\"4406\">fantastic first two weeks<\/strong>, full of creativity, discussion, and enthusiasm.
