Music (Monday)

In addition to our usual Monday music session, Mrs Garrick introduced the bairns to the piano keys, asking if anyone knew their letters.  We found out that the keys were named after letters from A to G.  The bairns placed their finger on a C note and played along, listening for their part in Old Macdonald had a Piano!

Outdoor Play (Monday-Friday)

The bairns explored all weathers outdoors this week.

Visitor from the Sea! (Wednesday)

One of our families brought in an octopus.  The bairns watched as it tried to escape from the bucket, blew bubbles under the water and swam around.  “It’s slimy!”

Numeracy (Monday-Friday)

There are always opportunities for numeracy development all around the nursery.  The bairns have engaged in number puzzles, using direction in Google Maps, sorting shapes, cutting snack, building models and creating shapes at the playdough station.

Jumpstart January (Monday-Friday)

We have continued our Jumpstart January with movement in the multicourt including the traffic light game, hoop games in the hall, Floor is Lava Dinosaurs, Cosmic Kids Dragon Yoga and Just Dance.

Block Play (Monday-Friday)

The bairns have used the big blocks for jumping while role playing different animals.  “I’m a butterfly.”  They have also made a fishing boat.  Using the smaller wooden blocks they built jenga towers, constructed dinosaur models and lined up the blocks before knocking them down in a domino rally.

Hand Hygiene (Tuesday)

The bairns tried out the handwashing station borrowed from Environmental Health.  They used special cream to rub into their hands before trying to wash it off.  When they placed their hands under the UV light, any spots that they had missed while washing would show up white.  We will revisit this again next week.

Music (Monday)

During music we moved our bodies by stretching, shrinking, turning and jumping to warm up.  We listened to the music while moving in time around the hall.  The bairns copied their friends’ moves for Everybody Do This.  We marched around the hall singing the Up Helly Aa song.  Then, after some very fast Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, we lay down and relaxed before tiptoeing to the door to line up and head back to nursery.

Adventure to the Burn (Tuesday)

We went for a walk to the burn for our Jumpstart January session on Tuesday.  The bairns splashed in the shallow parts of the water, threw stones, watched their poo sticks float and climbed over the rocks.  The bairns also tested out the muddy puddles, seeing how much they would splash.

Jumpstart January (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday)

We have continued our Jumpstart January sessions with games in the hall including toilet tag, traffic lights and stick in the mud.  The bairns also gathered it the quiet room for Just Dance which was very energetic.

Bookbug (Wednesday)

Claire joined us for a Bookbug session this week.  The bairns listened and joined in with the songs and nursery rhymes including Incy Wincy Spider, Peter & Paul and Brian & Blanche .  Then we all hopped on our horses, stopping to tell each other their names, ages and colours.  “My horse is called Unicorn Sparkle!”  “My horse is a hundred.”  The story this week was called Oi Dog! by Kes & Claire Gray and Jim Field.  Cat liked sticking by the rules but frog had other plans in this hilarious rhyming story.

Bee-Bot (Friday)

The bairns used the Bee-Bot to do some simple programming by counting the squares on the mat.  They waited for their turn and also discussed directions – right, left and forwards.

Literacy (Monday-Friday)

The bairns have been engaged in various literacy-related activities.  The message centre is always a popular part of the nursery and the bairns bring their imagination to life through their drawings and other creations.  Early literacy also includes jigsaw making, playdough, taking turns in games, scissor skills and patterns.

Play and Learning (Monday-Friday)

Here is a selection of our play and learning from the remainder of the week.  The bairns have created spinner art, experienced the force of the wind outside, made snack and built dens and cities across the nursery.  The nursery attended Cunningsburgh’s Got Talent and saw a range of acts from magicians, comics, singers, musicians and dancers.  It was a real treat!

Welcome back to Nursery! We have been hearing the bairns Festive holiday news and they were all quick to reconnect with friends, plan their play and share ideas.

Outdoor Play (Tuesday-Friday)

The bairns have explored the snow by building snowmen, sliding down the path using different materials and loose parts, digging and climbing.  They have explored using paint on snow and different tools they can use to do this. The bairns showed an interest in ice, how it’s formed and how it can be broken or melted.  After experiencing this outside, the bairns watched a short video about icebreakers in Canada and saw the large ships powering through the ice using their sharp bow.

Google Maps (Wednesday-Friday)

Using Google Street View to find where they, family members, and friends live has been a focus this week and a valuable opportunity to model and use directional language and demonstrate a knowledge of the local community and beyond. The bairns used the nursery as a starting point to find their homes, using familiar landmarks to guide them in the right direction. One of the road trips had a pit stop to Tesco to buy some sausages.

Jumpstart January (Tuesday-Friday)

We are taking part in JumpStart January which means moving our bodies for 15 minutes every day.  We asked the bairns for their ideas which included skipping, running, going for a walk and a dance party.  We began our JumpStart January with a session in the hall using balls and hula hoops.  The bairns kicked, threw, caught, dribbled and rolled the balls.  This week has also included a Joe Wicks workout, Cosmic Kids yoga and the balance bikes.

Play and Learning (Tuesday-Friday)
