Thank you Mr Spence

As you are probably all aware we have been very lucky to have Mr Spence working with us for the last 5 weeks as part of his PDGE course. His focus was with second level but he has enjoyed being involved with the whole school. He has been involved in the planning and delivering of numeracy and literacy lessons as well as taking a lead role in teaching primary 4-7 about climate change. We have really enjoyed having him with us and can’t believe how fast these last 5 weeks have gone. We are sad to see him go. We wish him all the very best in his next teaching placement and in his future teaching career! Thank you very much for everything you have done Mr Spence!

Pancake Day

Yesterday was Pancake day or also named Shrove Tuesday…..

Shrove Tuesday is the day when we eat pancakes. This is the last day before the Christian festival of Lent. In olden days Christians did not eat many foods such as milk, eggs and fats during Lent.

They did not waste food so before Lent began, they had a feast using all the food that would go bad before they could eat it again. Pancakes were a dish that used up the foods by adding some flour.

Lent is the 40 days before Easter – We don’t count Sunday’s though. At this time, our days get longer and it is the start of Spring Time.

Lent begins the day after Pancake Day and the last day ends with Palm Sunday. This is the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and people waved palm leaves at him and laid them at his feet. Jesus went to the desert for 40 days and nights. He didn’t have any food or water. The devil came and tried to make Jesus eat and drink and made Jesus lots of promises but Jesus said NO!

Lent is a time when Christians give up something special like chocolate. This reminds them when Jesus went into the desert and gave up food.

There are many special days during Lent leading up to Easter. Easter is the most important of all Christian festivals. Lent is a time when Christians prepare for Easter and think of Jesus.

If you were to give up something for Lent what would it be? We had a great discussion of lots of things we could give up.

So yesterday afternoon we made pancakes and our school cook Jem made us pancakes for lunch too so we were very lucky to have pancakes twice!

We got to measure out all the ingredients:

  • 200g of flour
  • Tablespoon of sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • Milk

Once we measured out all the ingredients we had to mix this together to make the pancake batter. After we got all the lumps out of it we spooned this into the pan to make little individual pancakes to cook them. We all had the chance to flip the pancakes and even tried to flip pancakes from one frying pan to another. It was great fun and there was lots of laughter!

Once the pancakes were cooked we each got to eat one and they were tasty!

Tig Tags sale day

Well what a brilliant day we had! On Thursday the 8th of December Tig Tag had a big sale day and we sold ALL of our Christmas gift tags that we made!

We were very busy in the morning trying to set up our stall so that it looked nice.

We sold a lot within the first 15 minutes and thought we weren’t going to have enough at one point but thankfully we had just the right amount! We made roughly 350 gift tags however some of the gift tags had 3 tied together so we think we actually made between 400-500 gift tags in total which showed how hard we worked over the last few weeks! (We thought some of the tags were too small or too thin to go by itself so we put ones together to make quality gift tags) We put 6 gift tags in a penny mix bag – this way you could see how good they were without having to open the packet. We should make a special mention to R.S. Hendersons for donating the penny mix bags for us to use. We made labels with our logo on them to put on the front of the bag so that people could see that we made them.

We had 57 packets to sell – 3 of these were hanging on a lovely tree.

We decorated an old branch from a tree so that we could display our lovely gift tags. We painted it with glue then sprinkled glitter all over it, it looked so good that people offered to buy it and we sold it at the end for £20!!

1 packet of 6 gift tags cost £1. Everyone took a turn of selling the gift tags and did a great job. We were very polite and worked well as a team.

When we took our float out and paid our expenses then we were left with an amazing £86.52 profit!

Primary 3 and 4 were able to put what they were learning in Numeracy about money to good use when counting and double counting their money.

We decided as a group that we would like to donate the money we raised to Cancer Research.

P1-4 Enterprise

Primary 1-4 have created their own enterprise business and want to tell you about it.

First of all we looked at what enterprise was, what a business was and thought about businesses that we know of.

We then had to think of what we wanted to do for our enterprise project/our own business. We all thought of different ideas and took a vote. We decided to make gift tags. Once we decided what we were making we had to think of a name for our business. We all thought of a good name and wrote these on the board. Once we shared all our ideas we took a vote on which one we thought would be the best name for our business. Our winning name was Tig Tag.

After this we  looked at logos and how people can identify companies just from their logo – Miss Nicholson created a quiz for us with well known logos. It was great fun and we did really well at identifying them. Then it was our turn to create our own logo for Tig Tag. We all drew our ideas on a paper and had a vote using pom poms.

This week we began making our gift tags, we had different jobs to do. P1 were stamping out little Christmas designs for us to stick onto our gift tags, P2/3 were drawing Christmas tags – we have stars, baubles, Christmas trees, scalloped edged tags and regular rectangle tags. P3/4 were cutting these out. Next week we hope to begin decorating these tags.

Children In Need 2016

For Children In Need this year we came to school in our pajamas and had a sponsored times table challenge. When Mrs Lawson blew the whistle everyone had to stop what they were doing and write down their chosen times table as many times as they could until the second whistle blew then we swapped over to mark each others work. Once we knew how many each person got right we collated this to get a total number and recorded them on a piece of paper under our class. This is what each class were doing:

  • P1 – addition sums
  • P2 – 2x table
  • P3 – 4x table
  • P4 – 6x table
  • P5 – 11x table
  • P6 – 5x table
  • P7 – 11x table
  • Staff – they did a mixture of the 2, 13 and 64x tables!

Primary 7 organised different activities for us to do. They put us into cooperative learning groups and told us we had 15 minutes at each station. There were 5 different stations that each primary 7 led: Emma led an information station learning about what Children In Need is and what they do with the money raised. James led a colour/design the best Pudsey competition. Dylan had Children In Need games on the laptops. Sabienne had a group completing a word search to do with Children in Need and Jessica led a dance group. Here are some photos of our day.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored us for this challenge, along with this money and the £1 we all paid for wearing our pajamas and the sale of the key rings (they were £1) we raised a fantastic £350.65!!!

Bonfire Night

We had our bonfire on the 5th of November which was actually on Bonfire night. We have this up at Mursetter.

We went around Cullivoe on the 22nd of October to collect the wood for the bonfire. We had a full truck of wood and pallets which was great and made this the biggest bonfire we have ever had.  We had a Guy Fawkes to put on top of our bonfire however the secondary pupils make it and they came with it too late so we had to throw it on the side instead. Guy Fawkes was a man who tried to blow up Parliament.

After the bonfire was lit there was a firework display which was great. We loved seeing all the different rockets, some were really loud. We also got sparklers to hold too.

After the bonfire we went to the Cullivoe hall to have a supper. We had hot dogs, burgers, beans and chips. It was delicious!! We had a selection of sauces to go on top. After we had our lovely supper we played games.

Ying is back!

On Wednesday the 2nd of November Ying came back to teach us Mandarin. She kindly took back Chinese (green) tea, we all tried it but not everybody liked it. We were split up so primary 6/7 went first then 4/5 followed. We learned how to say hello, thank you, your welcome, bye bye, mum and dad. We also learned different tones. We are happy to have Ying back, we LOVE Chinese!!!

Happy Halloween

On Friday night we went guizing. There was about 41 children that went guizing. We started altogether and visited the houses around the school before splitting into two groups and going North/South. There were lots of brilliant costumes and we had lots of fun. The older secondary pupils went guizing too. They scared one lot of children by hiding in the bus when they were in one of the houses, when we came out and opened the bus door then they jumped out and shouted which gave poor Jessica a terrible gluff! We had lots of fun and got lots of sweeties from the kind people in Cullivoe. They were also kind enough to give us money to help buy fireworks for next weekend. Mrs Lawson thinks we raised about £500 so THANK YOU very much for your generosity!

On Sunday we had our Halloween party at the school. Most of us attended and all dressed up. We all took in pumpkins that we had carved. There were lots of really good ones!

We had a parade to show off our costumes then played the corner game.

Then we split into two groups so we could start with a different game. The older ones went through to the classroom first and the younger ones stayed in the canteen then they swapped over after a while. In the canteen we could colour Halloween pictures or make little ghosts out of tissues. In the classroom you had to try and eat a pancake or a party ring that was tied onto a bit of string and covered in syrup or chocolate sauce. It was extremely messy but great fun!

After this we all came through to the classroom to play a different game. We had to get into 4 different groups, one at a time we had to run up to the table put our heads into a bowl of oatmeal and try to get as much witches fingers and cats poop into our mouths as we could and carry it over to our bowl on our chair before the next person could go. (It wasn’t really witches fingers or cat poop, just chocolate fingers and malteasers.) The team with the most in their bowl at the end won. After this game we played another one called mice pirls (again it wasn’t really mice pirls but raisins.) We had to use our mouths to carry one raisin at a time from the bowl on our chair to the bowl on the table at the other side. The team that got all their raisins in their bowl on the table won.

Once we finished these games we ducked for apples. We went against each other. This was the last game to play.

We had sooooo much fun at the party! Thank you to all that came and took part in the games!

Preparing for the Yell Show

On Monday 29th of August we decided we would make a cake to enter into the Yell show. We had to decide what to make and decided on a sheep cakeas it is an agricultural show. Then on Thursday the 1st of September we baked the best cake anyone has ever seen! The whole school baked with Miss Nicholson and Miss Jamieson.  We worked as a team and got into groups to make a different part of the cake. There was a team making the icing, a team making the big cake and 4 groups making fairy cakes (this was for the sheep). Ruby, Abbie and Jasmine designed how the cake would look thinking about the icing, the fencing and where the sheep would go. At golden time on Friday we decorated the cake – icing the big slab of cake to make it look like a park, we used curlywurlys and chocolate fingers to make a fence then decorated the individual fairy cakes to make them look like sheep by using mini marshmallows. Kane made one cake look like a dog. Miss Nicholson had bouht edible flowers so we used these to decorate the cake and used chocolate chips to make it look like sheep pirls.
