Global Goals

The eco committee have been learning about the United Nations  Global Goals. They have created presentations to tell the younger children what they have been learning.

P4 and 5 created a rap to tell us about the United Nations and how there are 17 global goals.

The eco committee looked through all these goals and chose ‘Life Below Water’ to focus on this year.

Primary 6 created a presentation about this to tell us more. They explained what sea pollution is and how this affects animals that live underwater. They told us that we should always put our rubbish in the bin and gave us ideas of who we could speak to to learn more.

 

Shoebox Appeal

This year after receiving a presentation at the correct level for the children all about the shoebox appeal, what it does and where it goes, the pupil council took a unanimous decision in taking part in this appeal. They sent out letters to each family and have taken on the responsibility of wrapping, sorting through all the items and filling the boxes. Primary 7 have done a fantastic job of supporting the younger children in doing so.

We have outdone ourselves this year as we have managed to wrap and fill an amazing……41 boxes!! There are a mixture of boxes for babies all the way up to elderly women.

We would like to say a huge thank you to anyone who has donated items to help us with this very worthy cause!

Our busy term

Term 1 has been a very busy term for us here in Cullivoe. We have learnt a lot and achieved a lot too. Here is what we have to say about our learning and our term!

Numeracy

Primary 2 – we have been learning our 2x table and what greater than and less than means and looks like. It was easy!

Primary 3 – We have been learning our 3x table and have worked hard in numeracy. We liked learning about place value.

Primary 4 – we have been learning the 8x table!

Primary 5 -we have been learning the 8 and 9x table. We have been playing beat my score which is really fun!

Literacy

We have all been learning about newspaper reports and the features of these. We have enjoyed learning about this and writing our own articles! We know that a newspaper needs a name, headlines, it has to be interesting, it is written in paragraphs, they have adverts in them, they are written in the 3rd person. We could give you more but that’s enough for now.

P5-7 have also been learning about superlative and comparative adjectives and looking at dictionary skills as well as recapping punctuation and developing comprehension and reading with expression.

Health and Wellbeing

We have been learning about the body and the organs. Here are a few that we have looked at: lungs, small and large intestine, pancreas, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, bladder, gall bladder, oesophagus, rectum and the brain.

We have done an experiment which looked at the digestive system. It was really fun but also disgusting!

We had a couple of visitors in to talk to us about our topic. The health improvement practitioner talked to us about how to keep our body healthy. We had a scientist come in to talk to us about her work and different diseases/how to keep ourselves healthy.

The younger ones have been looking at throwing and catching in PE whilst the older ones have been learning about netball.

Other things within the school

Primary 4 have really enjoyed learning the recorder and have picked it up well.

We had our termly concert on Tuesday which was really good. The recorder players, both primary 4 and 5, all nailed their tunes which was fantastic!

The JRSOs have had a visit from a police officer to show them how to use a speed gun.

The pupil council have organised a coffee morning to support the charity Macmillan cancer support.

P4-7 have been learning about the global goals in eco this term. We have been picking topics to look at; life below water.

We have been learning to have a conversation in French and the older children have been looking at food.

Our feel good song we learnt this term was ‘Always look on the bright side of life.’

We focussed on article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which is: You have the right to the best possible health.

We took part in a STEM challenge to make a bridge for the three billy goats. We were in groups and had to design and make a bridge that would hold the 3 billy goats and the troll! It was really fun and we worked really well as a team. The bridges were all successful and held a lot of weight!

Out with school

We took part in the Harvest service and performed our Harvest Samba.

We had a lot of prize winners at the Yell Show AND Cullivoe Primary School have been awarded a trophy for the most prize winning entries!!

A few of the children have made the achievement wall this term due to passing their deep end test, winning medalsat various things. So a big well done!

 

Only 2 more days of school everyone! We are excited for the holidays and for Halloween.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Young Journalist of the Year visits Cullivoe Primary

This term we have all been learning about newspapers and the features of these. We know there is a headline which is the title of an article; this should be short, catchy and it can use alliteration, be humerous or serious. A byline is who wrote the article and what their job is. Orientation is the first paragraph in an article that grabs the readers attention; it is short and answers the questions: Who, What, Where and When. The main body of the article is written in past tense and uses the third person, it is presented columns and split into paragraphs. It gives you more details about what has happened and how it has happened. They have quotes of what people has said. There is usually a picture of what or who the article is about with a caption underneath that explains what is happening in the picture/who is in the picture and who took the picture. Re-orientation is the final paragraph that brings the article up to date, it is written in the present tense.

Daniel Lawson, who won Young Journalist of the Year in February, from BBC Radio Shetland came in to talk to us about being a journalist and althugh he doesn’t write newspaper articles he did discuss the different forms news takes: newspaper, tv news reports, radio, website, the ii (local). He also spoke of  where you find news. We discussed fake news too. He showed us some of the equipment he uses which was cool to see. It was really interesting and we thanked him very much for taking the time to come up to talk to us.

 

 

Queensferry Crossing

We keep up to date with the news and everyone tries to share either local, national or international news in the morning. We have been discussing the Queensferry crossing.

Did you know that it is the longest bridge of its type in the world at 1.6 miles long. It is also Britain’s tallest bridge at 210m.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon lit the Queensferry Crossing with a light show  to mark the handover of the new bridge to the Scottish Government.

The Queen officially opened the Queensferry crossing exctly 53 years after she opened the Forth Road Bridge!

Jack Jamieson and a few of his friends were lucky enough to be able to walk across the Queensferry Crossing – this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! He very kindly sent us pictures that he took so that we could see the structure of the bridge. There was also a picture of some facts about the crossing.

 

Cooperative learning

This afternoon we are working cooperatively to find out more about our organs. We have split ourselves into different groups and chosen an organ to research:

  • heart
  • lungs
  • liver
  • kidneys
  • intestines – both large and small
  • pancreas
  • gallbladder
  • stomach

We are researching what it does and why it is important. We are going to make a poster to show all our learning and research. Miss Jamieson and Miss Nicholson has found us videos on Twig to watch linked to each organ to help us, they were really interesting and fun to watch. Each group will then present their findings to the rest of the school so we all know about each organ.

Welcome Back!

A huge welcome back to everyone today. It has been lovely to hear everyone’s news from the summer and to see how much they have all grown! Dean is very nearly the same height as Miss Jamieson!!

We have had a very busy day creating our class charter. First we went over our rights and why we have them before splitting into groups and reading through the 42 articles and highlighting all the ones we think were appropriate for school. We then fed back to the class before returning into our groups to select what we thought were the 4 most important articles for our class charter. We had 24 to choose from so we held a vote to narrow this down. There was some great discussion and some arguments for and against why we should or shouldn’t have them. We ended up with 5 articles for our class charter as we thought they were all important.

Our next step was to design our class charter! We all had the chance to design our own class charter before taking a vote on which one we thought would like to make. Everyone thought really hard about how they could add the article, right and responsibility into their design. I think you will agree there were some fantastic designs to choose from.

We all had 3 pom poms which we then placed on our ‘top’ 3 choices. Everyone got to vote, even the staff! The winning design was Jasmine’s island.

After dinner primary 7 decided on what needed to be done and split us all into groups so that we all had a job to do. We had one group measuring the wall to see how big the charter had to be, decide on what the responsibilities were, people making the sand, the tree trunks, the palm trees, the sun, the buckets, the heading, etc. It was a very busy and productive afternoon! We all worked really well and helped each other. We are very close to finishing so hopefully by tomorrow we can share a photo of the finished display!

 

 

Whole School Discussion

Before lunch we had a whole school discussion, the first discussion was about the attainment gap. Jessica explained to everyone what the attainment gap is and asked everyone’s opinions on why they think there is this gap. Everyone had a chance to give their thoughts on this topic and Jessica noted these down for the teachers to have a look at to see if there is anything that can be done.

The second discussion was why our school is different to other schools – we had a great discussion on this one, here is some of our points:

  • some schools aren’t as colourful as our one
  • some schools have different playgrounds for different classes whereas we can play anywhere in our playground
  • we all gather together in the morning to say good morning to everyone in different languages and share our news (local, national, international and personal) We also gather together at other parts of the day like after break and lunch and at the end of the day when we all say good afternoon to each other.
  • we don’t have separate classes with different teachers for each primary – it is split primary 1-4 and 5-7. This gives us the chance to build friendships and have discussions with different people.
  • we can walk into the other classroom to get a pencil or glue sticks for example as we do this quietly without disrupting the class whereas other schools you have to knock, interrupt that lesson and talk to the teacher
  • we don’t have assigned seats – we can sit anywhere
  • when it is someone’s birthday they get to wear the birthday hat all day and we sing Happy Birthday to them in 11 different languages! (English with sign language, French, German, Italian, Croatian, Gaelic, Spanish, Chinese, Welsh, Dutch and Lithuanian)
  • the teachers here are in our community so we see them more and you feel you know them better
  • teachers here don’t shout in our school whereas in other schools they do
  • our teachers listen to what you have to say
  • our teachers are friendly

We are the best school in the world!

 

Pancake Day

Yesterday was Pancake day or also named Shrove Tuesday…..

Shrove Tuesday is the day when we eat pancakes. This is the last day before the Christian festival of Lent. In olden days Christians did not eat many foods such as milk, eggs and fats during Lent.

They did not waste food so before Lent began, they had a feast using all the food that would go bad before they could eat it again. Pancakes were a dish that used up the foods by adding some flour.

Lent is the 40 days before Easter – We don’t count Sunday’s though. At this time, our days get longer and it is the start of Spring Time.

Lent begins the day after Pancake Day and the last day ends with Palm Sunday. This is the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and people waved palm leaves at him and laid them at his feet. Jesus went to the desert for 40 days and nights. He didn’t have any food or water. The devil came and tried to make Jesus eat and drink and made Jesus lots of promises but Jesus said NO!

Lent is a time when Christians give up something special like chocolate. This reminds them when Jesus went into the desert and gave up food.

There are many special days during Lent leading up to Easter. Easter is the most important of all Christian festivals. Lent is a time when Christians prepare for Easter and think of Jesus.

If you were to give up something for Lent what would it be? We had a great discussion of lots of things we could give up.

So yesterday afternoon we made pancakes and our school cook Jem made us pancakes for lunch too so we were very lucky to have pancakes twice!

We got to measure out all the ingredients:

  • 200g of flour
  • Tablespoon of sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • Milk

Once we measured out all the ingredients we had to mix this together to make the pancake batter. After we got all the lumps out of it we spooned this into the pan to make little individual pancakes to cook them. We all had the chance to flip the pancakes and even tried to flip pancakes from one frying pan to another. It was great fun and there was lots of laughter!

Once the pancakes were cooked we each got to eat one and they were tasty!
