On Friday the 18th September, we had a visit from Eleanor Hutcheon from UHI Shetland. She came in to speak to us about air resistance and forces, which linked in perfectly to our topic this term – Science and Scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleanor came with a challenge for the class, to build “land yachts” using a variety of materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pupils were told to design a land yacht that when placed in front of a fan, would travel the furthest distance. This made them think about lots of different factors – weight, balance, air resistance, design, shape, friction and many more. There were lots of different and brilliant ideas!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the land yachts travelled a considerable distance, most over 5 meters! We had two pairs – Emilia and Jamie, Orvin and Mikey – who’s yachts travelled 7.5 meters and came to a halt in exactly same place! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
