Hints and tips to encourage a love of reading
- Any reading is reading – whether it’s blogs, comics, newspapers, magazines etc
- Set an example by letting them see you read
- Don’t make them finish a book they aren’t enjoying –there’s lots more to choose from
- Don’t criticise what they read—if they come home with a ‘comic book’ or a so-called ‘easy reader’ that’s reading and should be encouraged
- Read some books written for teens—this can give you an insight into the concerns and pressures felt by today’s teenagers.
- Focus on what they love – some teens prefer non-fiction i.e. sports or cars and some love fiction but only want stories about certain topics
- Think about different types of books: non-fiction, graphic novels, comics etc
- Use technology—eBooks, audio books, online magazines (free at shetland-library.gov )
