Guido van Rossum, a Dutch programmer, began working on Python in the late 1980’s, and first released it in 1991 as Python 0.9.1.

He attributes choosing the name “Python” to “being in a slightly irreverent mood (and a big fan of Monty Python’s Flying Circus).

The most recent version of Python is 3.9, released in October 2020.
