Homework Policy

Art and Design is a skills-based subject. Regular home practice to improve basic skills is essential if a pupil is to progress in Art and Design, especially in the upper school, when students study the subject by choice.

Sketchbook Homework in S1 and S2 is now embedded in a fortnightly cycle each study should have at least 45 minutes or more spent on individual outcomes. Homework will often be related to gathering written or visual information or resources for a project. The sketchbook work is marked in line with the grading chart in every sketchbook, as well as with comments on effort, use of visual elements and advice to help the students improve. We use a marking chart, available to see on our web pages.

National 4/5 pupils are also provided with homework exercises which are integral and crucial to the completion of their coursework. They should spend at least an hour on these studies, though very often it will require longer than this. At National 4/5 and Higher level, pupils will also be given Critical homework. Because of the demands on these resources, it may be appropriate for pupils to complete this work in school, at lunchtimes or at the end of the day in after-school workshops offered in the department.

Pupils should make every effort to complete and hand in homework on time.  If for any reason they are unable to undertake work at home, they are welcome to use the department at break times and/or after school.  As homework is an important part of the art and design course, allowing for development, consolidation of skills and encouraging independent learning. We would appreciate parental support in the completion of individual themed tasks.
