By singing rhymes and songs with children, you are supporting their mathematical understanding. Using music can,<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399\">Help children <em>connect a number quantity with its name<\/em>. When we hold up 5 fingers to represent Five Little Speckled Frogs we are helping children connect that visual representation with the number name.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399\">Giving a <em>visual representation for number relationships<\/em>. When we sing \u20182 Little Dickie Birds\u2019, we are supporting children\u2019s developing number senseof one and one equalling two as well as supporting the conceptual understanding that when one bird flies away then there is only one left and when that flies away there is zero remaining.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399\">Emphasise<\/span>\u00a0<i style=\"color: #333399\">small quantities<\/i><span style=\"color: #333399\">, creating strong foundations and understanding with small quantities before moving on to larger numbers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399;font-size: 1rem\">Develop\u00a0<em>finger perception<\/em>. Lots of finger rhymes and action songs help children to tell which finger is which. Research says that the brain \u2018sees\u2019 our fingers when doing maths calculations even when we aren\u2019t using them and that children who have good finger perception do better mathematically.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399\">Support learning <em>Forward and Backwards Number sequences<\/em>. Children learn to say the order of the numbers forwards and backwards through songs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a They find this more difficult than counting objects whether in pictures or in real life. Start with simple rhythms and build to more complex ones as the children become more confident.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the children to count the number of sounds they hear e.g. 4 claps. Ask them to clap a specified number of times.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the duration between the sounds and the speed of the sounds they hear.
