Supporting My Child

We feel that working in partnership with our parents is vital for improving outcomes for our pupils; allowing them the best chances of reaching their potential.

There are many ways in which together we can support your child on their learning journey. As a guide, Early Level covers ELC to Primary 1; First Level covers Primary 2-4; and Second Level covers Primary 5-7 (although for all learners this is individual and may be achieved quicker or later).

Each term we will send home a Curriculum Overview. This gives you lots of information for each curricular area- use this to open up a conversation with your child, or pick something at home which will use the same skills in a different context (e.g. if your child is learning their multiplication tables try having them use this to count how many items are in a food packet at the supermarket or practice counting in 5’s as you walk up the stairs).

Homework is also a way in which you can support your child’s learning at home. Homework should be an opportunity to practice learning that we have explored at school. Take time with your child to ask them about what they are learning through their tasks in spelling and reading. Remember, if your child is struggling with a task or is reluctant to engage speak to us- it should not be a battle as that will impact on how your child approaches homework the next time.

Showbie is a useful tool is being able to see what your child has been learning in school. Each term our teachers will upload work into your child’s portfolio which evidences their learning (literacy and numeracy). Some teachers will upload items into Showbie so that you can see what your child has been learning everyday; other teachers will use it to support learning in the classroom with files for different areas that they will be teaching. If your child is in Primary 4 and up then you should encourage them to show you their work on Showbie regularly- just remember that not everything there is for every child!

Mrs Douglas is our Support for Learning Teacher and she manages the support staff in school too. Mrs Luke, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Dyet are in and out of every class to help and support our learning. They will sometimes be helping everyone, sometimes small groups or sometimes they help 1:1 on a specific target. Together the team set out to help reduce barriers to learning. Mrs Douglas has a Showbie page for those pupils who get specific support- parent will be given the code so that they can see what their child’s targets are. She will also arrange consultations with parents and specifically offer a chance to meet at Parent Consultations in November.

There are also a number of people who are supporting your child in school, often in the background. Some of this is for specific difficulties or challenges; some to support and enhance the learning offer. If there are any of our Partner services and agencies that you would like to know more about please arrange a time to speak to us.
