From Early Level mark-making and storytelling to upper primary text analysis and publication, digital tools bring language to life. Pupils use online platforms to explore phonics, develop spelling, and create written pieces with purpose and flair. Digital learning supports collaboration, feedback and creativity — ensuring every learner becomes a confident, capable communicator in both traditional and digital spaces.

Our Literacy Vision

At Stow Primary, literacy lies at the heart of everything we do. We believe every child deserves to become a confident reader, writer, and communicator — ready to engage with texts, express ideas clearly, and thrive in a world full of possibilities.

Our approach is rooted in our school values: ON TRACK — Outstanding, Nurturing, Tolerant, Respectful, Achieving, Confident, Kind — ensuring that as children develop literacy, they also grow as responsible and reflective individuals.

How We Teach Literacy

Early Level Foundations (Play-Based Learning)

At Early Level (P1 and P2), literacy develops through rich play experiences. Children explore sounds, stories and mark-making across the environment — in writing corners, role play, construction, malleable and outdoor areas. Teachers model language and nurture early phonological awareness.
Digital tools such as voice recorders, phonics and story apps, and tablet-based interactive stories are used meaningfully to build engagement, early vocabulary and communication confidence.

First Level Literacy (Developing Skills and Stamina)

At First Level (P2–P4), children build reading fluency, comprehension and writing stamina through structured teaching and guided practice.
Online platforms such as Bug Club and Epic! are used to practise grammar, spelling and comprehension skills in interactive ways. Pupils use word-processing tools to publish their writing, collaborate on shared documents, and record audio reflections on their work.
We emphasise talk for writing — pupils plan, rehearse and share their ideas before committing to text, ensuring a solid foundation in structure and vocabulary.

Second Level Literacy (Refinement and Depth)

At Second Level (P5–P7), learners refine their reading, writing, listening and talking skills through purposeful contexts, debate, and independent writing.
Digital tools support research, drafting and publishing — for example, using shared documents for peer editing, creating multimedia presentations, or publishing final pieces on class blogs.
We are proud to be part of the National Improving Writing Programme, ensuring consistent, high-quality writing pedagogy and equitable approaches across all stages.

Assessment and Support

Across all levels, we use formative assessment, digital portfolios and targeted supports to ensure every learner makes progress. Pupils reflect on their reading and writing goals, often using digital checklists and rubrics to self-assess and celebrate success.

Literacy at Stow Primary School At Stow Primary, our digital learning approach enhances literacy at every level.
