Parent Council

At Stow Primary School, we greatly value the involvement of parents and carers in their children’s education. Research shows that when parents are actively involved in school life, children achieve more and feel more confident.

The Parental Involvement Act (2006) strengthened the partnership between home and school by giving parents greater opportunities to contribute to their child’s education. It focuses on three key areas:

  • Learning at home
  • Home and school partnership
  • Parental representation through the establishment of Parent Councils

All parents and carers of Stow Primary pupils are automatically members of the Parent Forum. From this forum, representatives are elected to form the Parent Council, which works closely with the Head Teacher and school staff to promote positive home–school links and support the ongoing development of the school.

Aims of the Parent Council

  1. Create a welcoming and inclusive school community for all parents and carers.
  2. Strengthen the partnership between the school, its pupils, and families.
  3. Support the education and wellbeing of all pupils through school initiatives and activities.
  4. Represent the views of parents and carers on matters relating to school life and education.

The Parent Council acts as a bridge between the school and the wider parent body, ensuring that families are informed, involved, and able to share their views. The group also contributes to consultations with Scottish Borders Council’s Education Department and supports school events and initiatives throughout the year.

Meetings are held regularly and are open to all members of the Parent Forum. They provide an opportunity to hear updates from the school, discuss current projects, and share ideas.

We recognise that not everyone is able to attend meetings, but there are many ways to get involved — from helping at events and supporting fundraising, to sharing skills or offering feedback. Every contribution helps make a difference.
