{"id":86,"date":"2022-05-30T16:15:07","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T15:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/peebleshssocial\/?page_id=86"},"modified":"2022-05-31T10:19:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T09:19:14","slug":"higher-geography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/peebleshssocial\/higher-geography\/","title":{"rendered":"Higher Geography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ENTRY LEVEL<br \/>\n<\/strong>You will normally be expected to have attained a pass at N5 Geography, or another social subject.\u00a0 Exceptional circumstances will be considered on their merits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>COURSE CONTENT \u2013 What will I learn?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>There are three main sections in Higher Geography:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nYou will learn about different aspects of our physical environment from the air we breathe to the ground we walk on.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>Lithosphere<\/li>\n<li>Biosphere<\/li>\n<li>Hydrosphere<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Human &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nYou will learn about different human environments, how we have changed landscapes and populate areas of the world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Population<\/li>\n<li>Rural<\/li>\n<li>Urban<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Global Issues &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nYou will learn about two global issues that we are faced with, why they exist and how they could be solved.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>River Basin Management<\/li>\n<li>Development and Health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mapwork &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThis involves using an Ordnance Survey map and a variety of other sources (e.g. graphs\/tables) to answer a scenario-based question.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TEACHING METHODS \u2013 What will I do?<br \/>\n<\/strong>In the Geography department, we use a variety of teaching methods. You will be working as an individual much of the time, but often, also, in pairs, groups or as a whole class. All of the content will be teacher-led, but it is important that consolidation tasks are carried out independently. Your teacher will have high expectations of your levels of personal effort.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ASSESSMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<table width=\"716\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"130\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Assignment<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"586\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a report based on fieldwork and research, written under exam conditions with a prepared sheet of maps and graphs, and marked by the SQA.\u00a0 It is worth 27% of the final mark for Higher Geography.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"130\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Final Exam<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"586\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The examination for Higher Geography is <strong>two papers<\/strong>, worth 160 marks (73% of your grade):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paper 1<\/strong> is worth <strong>100 marks<\/strong> &#8211; Physical and Human Geography (50 marks each).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paper 2<\/strong> is worth <strong>60 marks<\/strong> \u2013 20 marks for two global issues topics (40 marks in total) and 20 marks for the mapwork scenario question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HOMEWORK<br \/>\n<\/strong>You will be given regular homework for Higher Geography \u2013 about <strong>1- 2 hours a week<\/strong>. Higher students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning, organisation and homework and to do significant amounts of extra reading and preparation for assessments.
