ENTRY LEVEL \u2013 What do I need to do it?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>You will normally be expected to have attained a pass at N5 History, or another social subject, preferably at grade A or B.\u00a0 Exceptional circumstances will be considered on their merits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

COURSE CONTENT \u2013What will I learn?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>There are two papers in the final Higher history exam, not including the Assignment. The two exam papers cover three units of learning.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The British and European & World Section<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Britain, 1851 – 1951<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>In this unit you will study the development of the British political system and welfare state.\u00a0 The four sections of the unit we will focus on are the campaign for women\u2019s suffrage, the reasons for, and effectiveness of, the Liberal social reforms of 1906 \u2013 1914 and the effectiveness of the Labour reforms of 1945- 51.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unit III \u2013 European and World<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Germany, 1815 – 1939<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>This unit focuses on two main areas \u2013 the development of German nationalism from 1815 to German unification in 1871 and the rise to, and consolidation of, power by the Nazis by 1939.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Scottish Section – Scotland and the Impact of the Great War, 1914-1928.
\n<\/span><\/b>In this section you will learn the reasons why the First World War was such a significant turning point in Scottish history.\u00a0 The unit will focus on four main areas \u2013 on the Scots who fought on the Western Front, the impact of the war on Scottish society and culture, the impact of the war on the Scottish economy and industry, and the impact of the war on Scottish politics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TEACHING METHODS \u2013 What will I do?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the History department, we use a variety of teaching methods. You will be working as an independent individual much of the time, but often, also, in pairs, groups or as a whole class.\u00a0\u00a0 There is a great deal of reading and writing to be done for Higher History.\u00a0 Your teacher will have high expectations of your levels of personal effort.\u00a0 Much of the course focuses on the development of essay-writing skills.\u00a0 While factual knowledge is obviously important, History also teaches you many skills that you will use at college and university or employment as well as in life in general, such as critical thinking, evaluating, essay writing, debating and arguing.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an essay, written in 90 minutes under exam conditions with a prepared plan, and marked by the SQA.\u00a0 It is worth 30 marks out of the total of 110 marks for Higher History.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
