Scottish Studies Award

The Scottish Studies Award provides opportunities for learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of Scotland – its people, language

s and dialects, society, culture, natural environment and heritage – and to make connections across the curriculum.

The Award has a broad and flexible framework, providing opportunities for personalisation and choice, and reflects a range of subject areas.

Award Level

The Scottish Studies Award is offered by the SfL department at SCQF levels 3 to 5.

Entry Level – what do I need to do it?

There are no prerequisites for entry to Scottish Studies.

Course Content – what will I learn?

A key feature is the opportunity for the Award to be tailored according to pupils’ needs and interests.

SCQF level 3: pupils complete a total of four units – the mandatory Scotland in Focus unit, plus three Units from at least two of the following groups, all with a Scottish context:
Group 1: Language and Literature (options include understanding language and producing language)
Group 2: Society and Environment (options include business, geography, health & food technology (contemporary food issues), history, modern studies, people & society and investigating religion & beliefs)
Group 3: Arts and Culture (options include analysing media and creating media, art & design and drama)

SCQF level 4: pupils complete a total of four units – the mandatory Scotland in Focus unit, plus three Units from at least two of the following groups:
Group 1 Language and Literature (options include English: analysis & evaluation, English: creation & production, Scots Language: History & Development, Scots Language: Understanding & Communication)
Group 2 Society and Environment (options include environmental science, geography, health & food technology (contemporary food issues), history, modern studies, people & society and investigating religion & beliefs)
Group 3 Arts and Culture (options include analysing media and creating media, art & design and drama)
Group 4 Business, Industry and Employment (options include business, creative industries, travel & tourism and uniformed & emergency services: an introduction)

SCQF level 5: pupils complete a total of four units – the mandatory Scotland in Focus unit, plus three Units from at least two of the following groups:
Group 1 Language and Literature (options include English: analysis & evaluation, English: creation & production, Scots Language: History & Development, Scots Language: Understanding & Communication)
Group 2 Society and Environment (options include environmental science, geography, health & food technology (contemporary food issues), history, modern studies, people & society, investigating religion & beliefs, sociology and philosophy)
Group 3 Arts and Culture (options include analysing media and creating media, art & design and drama)
Group 4 Business, Industry and Employment (options include business, creative industries, travel & tourism and 

Teaching Methods – what will I do?

Teaching methods will include discussion, role play, written questions, group work, presentations, and independent study and research. Classwork is accessed via MS Teams and OneNote.

Assessment

There is no formal examination for this course. Assessment for the Award will consist of gathering evidence to show that the pupil is
able to successfully complete all the Outcomes in the Units.
Assessment evidence can be presented in any form appropriate to a pupil and the activity undertaken. Pupils may also provide evidence through audio recordings, video diaries, blogs or other electronic means.

Progression

The Scottish Studies Award may provide progression to Scottish Studies at the next SCQF level; or a variety of Courses, Awards or Units at the next SCQF level, depending on the specific subject areas that have been studied as part of the Award.
