The course comprises three units of study: Food Studies, Textile Studies, Emergency Life Saving Skills.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of S1 students can choose to continue to study Health &amp; Life skills. Two courses are offered: Introduction to Hospitality, Fashion &amp; Textile Studies. Each is a two year course designed to equip students with the skills required for every day life and to prepare them for further study in their chosen subject area. Within S2\/3 students receive 2 periods of HLS per week.<\/p>\n<p>S1 curriculum<\/p>\n<p><strong>S1 Food Studies &#8211; 16 weeks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The need for good hygiene practices Kitchen safety and good working practices Recognising and using small items of equipment Weighing &amp; measuring Practical food preparation skills Knives and knife skills Safe storage of foodstuffs The Eatwell guide \u2013 nutrition &amp; dietary Targets<\/p>\n<p><strong>S1 Textiles Studies &#8211; 16 weeks <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Safety in the textiles room- recognising danger Recognising and using small items of equipment Design Briefs and specifications The sewing machine \u2013 parts &amp; use Practical sewing skills Computer aided manufacture (Machine embroidery) Fibres and fabrics Evaluating against design brief\/specification Textile labelling<\/p>\n<p>S1 Emergency Life Saving Skills- 4 weeks<\/p>\n<p>Assessing danger<\/p>\n<p>Making a 999 call<\/p>\n<p>Recovery position<\/p>\n<p>Choking and serious bleeds<\/p>\n<p>Heart attacks CPR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All students within S1 receive a single period of Health &amp; Life skills each week.
