In order to be more sustainable, Edenside have decided not to hand out Christmas cards this year. Instead, all the children have signed a Christmas wall in our main corridor.

Did you know, in the UK alone we use enough wrapping paper to circle the world 9 TIMES?!

What could you do at home to be more eco friendly this Christmas?

At the end of each week we have been reflecting on our learning and working to make this explicit and visible. We have been working to write down one thing we have learned throughout the week onto a long piece of paper. Each week we add to the paper and over the year we will look back on our learning and discuss how prior learning linked to future.

This is a great way for us to think about learning rather than activities and to see how learning builds up.

This could also help spark conversations at home about what’s been happening in school. Can you use this to talk about your child’s learning?  

Today  we used a variety of different shapes and thicknesses of prisms to investigate what happens to light. We used torched to refract the light through the prisms and see the spectrum of colours that it created as well the light bending.

We thought about this in real life and discussed this is how rainbows are created. We then detailed this in our science jotters to show as evidence of our learning.

Edenside celebrated Scottish Book Week last week. As part of this we had a Big Book Swap, individual reading and we watched an Author’s Live showing of the Gruffallo in Scots.

We throughly enjoyed exploring books and reading for enjoyment.

For number, we are working to use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract, Language method to develop our multiplication skills.

We started by using the Cuisenaire rods to create a 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication sum. We worked to multiply the tens and units and then put the some together using our whiteboards.

Then we created a pictorial representation of the sums in our jotters.

We will be using this method to understand 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication in the coming weeks.

This week we investigated factors and prime numbers using the Cuisenaire Rods.

We had to work out how many factors each number between 1 and 10 had, finding the prime numbers in the process.

Then we predicted the rest of the prime numbers up to 20 and tested our theory using the rods.

If you head to our ‘Pupil Zone’ area you will see a little update from the children in P6S. During ICT time this week we learned how to add a post to the blog and we all contributed to it. We will try to do this regularly to keep you up to date with the children’s thoughts and learning.

Our Science focus this term is to learn all about light. So far, we have looked at how light travels and items that are transparent, opaque and reflective. We have also looked at the human eye and how we see light.

Today we made our own periscopes using card and mirrors. We discussed how this proved that light travels in straight lines and how reflective surfaces like mirrors make light bounce in a different direction. We also watched a video that explained how a periscope was used and how the angle of the mirror was to be at 45 degrees in order to maximise what we could see.

As part of our JASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools) we are working to help others in our community. We organised the donations for the Kelso Food Bank and packed them to deliver today. We walked along to Kelso North Church and took part in sorting and packing food items.

We are working to understand how we can help others in our community and ways in which people around us could use our help.

As part of our topic rotations this term, we will all be taking part in some yoga sessions.

We will be working on our balance, strength and flexibility as well as working with partners to create paired poses.
