(2013) noted in Realising the Ambition (Education Scotland, p. 105), <cite>&#8220;local contexts exert an influence not only on the pedagogy and practice within each but on children&#8217;s play and learning experiences.&#8221;<\/cite><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>Key messages:<\/h3>\n<p><em>&#8220;Nature Pedagogy reframes nature as a teaching influence in its own right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This approach isn\u2019t just \u00a0about spending times outside-it\u2019s about building a relationship with nature.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/mindstretchers.academy\/pages\/nature-pedagogy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Nature Pedagogy | Mindstretchers Academy)<\/a><\/cite><\/p>\n<p><cite>&#8220;The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.&#8221;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>(Margaret McMillan, 1925)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Settings utilise the abundance of nature&#8217;s resources to enable the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/spaces-indoor\/\">indoor<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/spaces-outdoor-learning\/\">outdoor<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/spaces-beyond-the-gates\/\">beyond the gate<\/a> environments to offer high-quality provision for children.<\/li>\n<li>Practitioners create opportunities and a motivational shift for all (children and practitioners together) to get outside to wonder and benefit from shared nature-based experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>Ways we can do this:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Role of the Adult in Nature-Based Inquiry<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In Nature Pedagogy, the adult is not the deliverer of content\u2014but a <strong>co-researcher, a listener, and a guide<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They move alongside the child, helping to nurture curiosity and co-construct meaning from the world around them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rather than planning everything in advance, the adult\u2019s role is to observe closely, listen deeply, and respond with intention.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But that doesn\u2019t mean stepping back entirely.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This approach is all about knowing when to step in, and when to hold space.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When to offer a provocation, and when to simply say:\u00a0\u201cI wonder\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The adult also curates the learning environment\u2014selecting natural materials that invite exploration, and shaping outdoor spaces that support both risk and inquiry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They ensure the day allows for\u00a0<strong>long, uninterrupted periods of time in nature<\/strong>, where thinking and wondering can unfold at a child\u2019s pace.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ultimately, the role of the adult in Nature Pedagogy is a relational one.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It requires us to trust children as capable learners, to trust nature as a powerful co-educator, and to trust ourselves\u2014to notice, reflect, and act with purpose.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mindstretchers.academy\/pages\/nature-pedagogy\">Nature Pedagogy | Mindstretchers Academy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Realise the potential of nature to offer children infinite lines of inquiry that are as broad as they are deep, from the gravel, soil, and plants on our doorstep to outdoor, garden spaces and beyond the gate, to wider and potentially wilder areas of coastline, river courses, and woodlands.<\/p>\n<p>Use nature-based provocations where adult intent can initiate open-ended lines of inquiry and support pedagogy.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence and track pedagogy through Floorbooks, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/learning-journeys\/\">learning journeys<\/a> (digital or paper), communication books, or memory booklets.<\/p>\n<p>Look to nature first when planning and resourcing your outdoors.\u00a0 What has the weather offered you?\u00a0 Puddles from rain, frost patterns, icicles, snow to dig and shape, or shadows, can you catch your shadow?<\/p>\n<p><cite>&#8220;Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating: there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.&#8221;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>(John Rushkin, 1889)<\/p>\n<p>What is the play affordance of nature&#8217;s resources, for example, sticks?\u00a0 To bend into bows, add a string for fishing rods, tie leaves on for brooms, whittle, wrap with wool or ribbons.\u00a0 The possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n<p>Can you reflect, wonder and make connections to nature indoors, ice lanterns, shadow puppets and plays, mark-making with charcoal, inks made from berries, fruits grown for a snack, or cooking.<\/p>\n<p>Practitioners can create a sense of wonder by posing questions that lead to an investigation.\u00a0 What creatures are there in the garden, big and small?\u00a0 What evidence is left (holes in leaves, feathers, footprints)?\u00a0 Have magnifying glasses at the ready and detailed identification kits to extend <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/emerging-literacy-oral-language-phonological-awareness\/\">children&#8217;s language<\/a> with nature pedagogy; bee, bumblebee, white-tailed bumblebee.\u00a0 Feathers can be compared, matched or sorted by size, colour and pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Display children&#8217;s treasures of nature, indoors and or outside; for example, feathers found outdoors are saved in a treasure log.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10337\" walks beyond the gate are planned by the children who are involved in the organisation.\u00a0 Ask them what they will need to take?\u00a0 Allow the children to risk-assess.\u00a0 Do we need something to collect treasures in?\u00a0 Do we need a notepad for records, a measuring tape, a subitising cape?<\/p>\n<p>Nature books within library collections and are available outside.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonal resource banks with images, films, artefacts are available for the practitioners and
