#ff6600;\"><span class=\"ttfmake-icon mceNonEditable fas\">\uf0ad<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What is it?<\/h3>\n<p>A nurturing approach is at the heart of our core <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/vision-values-and-aims\/\" rel=\"noopener\">vision, values<\/a> and ethos in the Scottish Borders.\u00a0 This is crucial for learning, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/health-and-wellbeing\/\" rel=\"noopener\">wellbeing<\/a> and ensuring positive relationships are a hallmark of our communities.\u00a0 Scottish Borders Council has a twin-track approach.\u00a0 Whole-school or setting nurture approaches are applied universally, ensuring relationships are enhanced and inclusive practice is supported.\u00a0 Nurture groups provided a targeted intervention approach for children with significant emotional difficulties.\u00a0 Consider implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/individualised-support-care-plan-plus\/\">individualised support<\/a>, if necessary to enhance this.<\/p>\n<p><cite>&#8220;At the heart of nurture is a focus on wellbeing and relationships and a drive to support the growth and development of children and young people&#8230;&#8221;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/media\/2cbbaekj\/inc55applyingnurturingapproaches120617.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Applying Nurture as a Whole School Approach<\/a>, Education Scotland, p. 6)<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;All staff have a responsibility to take a child-centred approach which promotes and supports wellbeing, inclusion, equality and fairness.\u00a0 This entitlement to universal support for all children and young people is rooted in the environment in which they learn \u2013 along with its related ethos and relationships.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/media\/y1pagsjb\/supporting-learners-framework.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supporting Learners<\/a>, Education Scotland)<\/p>\n<p>The nurture aims are to provide children with attuned <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/sensitive-interactions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">interactions<\/a> and a developmentally appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/curriculum\/\" rel=\"noopener\">curriculum<\/a>, which facilitates language and communication development within a safe space.<\/p>\n<p>There is a mandatory expectation that all practitioners engage in the pre-recorded nurture presentations and self-evaluation at both a personal and setting level (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ajvu9_Qj_nA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SBC Includes: Introduction to Nurturing Approaches<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jfSSkSmq6Hg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nurture Principle 2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sIOfBfalXaE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nurture Principle 5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h3>Key messages:<\/h3>\n<p><cite>&#8220;The concept of nurture highlights the importance of social environments \u2013 who you&#8217;re with, and not who you&#8217;re born to \u2013 and its significant influence on social emotional skills, wellbeing and behaviour.\u00a0 Children and young people who have a good start in life are shown to have significant advantages over those who have experienced missing or distorted early attachments.\u00a0 They tend to do better at school, attend regularly, form more meaningful friendships and are significantly less likely to offend or experience physical or mental health problems.<\/cite><\/p>\n<p><cite>The nurturing approach offers a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage with missing early nurturing experiences, giving them the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers, develop their resilience and their capacity to deal more confidently with the trials and tribulations of life, for life.&#8221;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nurtureuk.org\/nurture\/what-nurture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nurture UK<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The 6 Nurture Principles were developed by educational professionals Eva Holmes and Eve Boyd (1999; cited as Nurture UK) and support best practices.\u00a0 They can be accessed
