{"id":12024,"date":"2021-10-06T16:51:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T15:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/?page_id=120"},"modified":"2026-03-09T09:11:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T09:11:07","slug":"stem-engineering","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/stem-engineering\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM &#8211; Engineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"builder-section-text_11\" class=\"builder-section-first builder-section builder-section-text builder-section-last builder-section-full-width builder-text-columns-1\" style=\"background-size: cover;background-repeat: no-repeat;background-position: center center\">\n<div class=\"builder-section-content\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-row\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-column builder-text-column-1\" id=\"builder-section-text_11-column-1\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-content\">\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #003300\"><a style=\"color: #003300\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sb\/earlylevelportal\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM<\/a> &#8211; Engineering<\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><strong>Interactions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Practitioners must use open-ended enquiry based questioning with the children.\u00a0 \u201cI wonder what would happen if\u2026?\u201d; \u201cHow would this change if we added\/took away\u2026.?\u201d; \u201cHow might this change this afternoon\/tomorrow\/next week?\u201d;\u00a0 \u201cWhy?\u201d.\u00a0 This will encourage children to think more deeply and \u00a0encourage them to use this language themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Help children to understand that there is more than one way to solve a problem and that it is okay to fail and then try again.<\/li>\n<li>Children need to manage some of their own risk and be encouraged to move beyond their comfort zone with adult support.<\/li>\n<li>Practitioners should use language which encourages the children to reflect on what they are doing or about to do e.g. \u201cHow can we make this safe\/safer?\u201d, \u201cWhat needs to happen before you can continue to build\u2026.?\u201d, \u201c Do you know how you are going to stay safe\/or get down from the tree?\u201d, \u201c Do you need more equipment to carry on with\u2026.?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Experiences<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Open-ended materials used in the outdoors to facilitate messier, bigger more risky play.\u00a0 This can be facilitated through the use of large loose parts, e.g. huge blocks, guttering, pipes, tyres, sectioned tree trunk, mud kitchen area, puddle\/water play, climbing opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Spaces<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>With use of a STEM Audit extend opportunities for the children to develop research, enquiry and problem solving skills.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Ensure a good supply of open ended materials for constructing, designing, building opportunities.\u00a0 This can be facilitated through block play, creation area, malleable and construction areas within the indoor and outdoor areas of the setting.<\/li>\n<li>Have a range of puzzles\u00a0 and games for the children to access independently.\u00a0 There should be some basic puzzles as well as more complex ones available.\u00a0 Games should be properly resourced with dice\/counters\/items to move around a board.\u00a0 Materials should be available for children to develop their own puzzles and games.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STEM &#8211; Engineering Interactions Practitioners must use open-ended enquiry based questioning with the children.\u00a0 \u201cI wonder what would happen if\u2026?\u201d; \u201cHow would this change if we added\/took away\u2026.?\u201d; \u201cHow might this change this afternoon\/tomorrow\/next week?\u201d;\u00a0 \u201cWhy?\u201d.\u00a0 This will encourage children to think more deeply and \u00a0encourage them to use this language themselves.
