Welcome to the Scottish Borders Council Early Level Portal

The Portal is continually being added to, refreshed and updated.  Some pages are being finalised and may not yet be linked.  Check out the What’s New page for any new additions! 

The Portal was designed by Scottish Borders Council to enable all Early Level (approximately 2 – 6 years old) Educators to easily access all the information they might need to inform and develop best practice within their settings. 

It details the Early Level approach to LEARNING, TEACHING & ASSESSMENT with clear guidance on Early Level Pedagogy and was created in line with the Scottish Borders Council’s Learning Teaching and Assessment Framework. Learn More

How can I access this information?

  Using the header bars above  

Main Menu – this drop-down heading allows you to view the Areas of Practice alphabetically, and also to see current National and Local Government guidance documents, websites and training opportunities. 

Early Level Pedagogy, Learning, Teaching & Assessment – these drop-down headings show you how the Areas of Practice fit into the SBC Learning, Teaching & Assessment Framework. 

What type of information is on the Portal?

A descriptor explaining each area of practice, key messages and ideas on ways we can do this.

How Do I Locate Information?

Search button – at the top right-hand corner of the page.  Type in a search word and PRESS RETURN on your keyboard. 

Pages Index button – located at the top and bottom of each page

Back button on your browser to return to information

Hold down Ctrl + F to find a specific keyword on any page

What do we mean by…?

“Practitioners” – This is a term we use that encompasses ALL staff and adults who are registered or qualified to work with babies and young children and includes childminders, teachers, headteachers, managers, supervisors, out of school support workers.  

“Early Learning & Childcare (ELC)” – includes all settings providing pre-school provision and early education , e.g. local authority settings, private, voluntary and independent providers, childminders etc. 

“Setting” – any Early Learning & Childcare (0 – 5 year olds) or Primary 1 classroom (4 – 6 year olds).
