Time Project
On Monday morning we were given a challenge – build the fastest K-Nex Car! We spent the morning building cars in groups and then we had to find out the fastest. We had to think about how to work out the speed. We eventually worked out that we needed to know the distance something has travelled and how long it took to go that distance. We could then work out the speed. Speed = distance/time.
We watched a video of how the police use this to work out if cars are speeding. You can watch the video here.
Mosaic
We have all been creating a mosaic tile this week with Peebles artist Deborah Campbell. You can visit her website here!
Each person in the school has designed a mosaic tile based on the natural world around us. We had to choose from loads of different tiles to create our designs, carefully cutting some of the tiles to shape. They are going to form a display in our new school.
Youth Music Initiative Showcase
We attended the Youth Music Initiative Showcase event in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels on Wednesday. Our band – ‘Shakalaka West Linton’ shared with the audience the different instruments we were using and what we had learned through all of the drumming sessions that we have had. We also gave an amazing drumming performance which rocked!
The audience were amazed at our performance.
Go Animate
Today we made animations on the website Go Animate. We all found it fun to create funny animations. There were different animations like a wildlife one or a spce one(which looked like Halo). We are hoping to some more animation next term – so this website was good to help us learn about what is involved in making an animation.
You can check out the website here.
Dancing at P.E
We are looking at ‘Inventions’ for our topic. So, at P.E we are creating a special inventions dance, which includes- the clock, the radio and the television. We dance to these songs,- Hung up, radio Gaga and television. These songs were written by Madonna, Queen and Hard- Fi.The targets included jumping, movement, imagination amd concentration. We have had to work together to create our dances and we will be performing them to the school during the last week of term.
The Lost Thing – setting description
We have been doing some imaginative writing – concentrating this week on writing a description of the setting. We watched the first part of the short film ‘The Lost Thing’ to help us.
Here is Sophie’s description:
” It was a bright summers dasy many years ago. I was walking along the beach. That is until I found the thing. That moment changed my life forever.
I was heading up to the rock pools when I heard a high pitched screeching noise. It was a noise that I had never heard before. It was like someone scraping a jagged piece of metal down a blackboard but a thousand times worse. As I got closer it got louder and louder. Finally I saw it. It was thin and boy. It looked lost, abandoned, hurt. Suddenly it stopped screeching. It had seen me.. It turned towards me and was staring at me with its pupiless, unblinking eyes. they were dark like a pitch black cave and murderous like a snake about to lunge on it’s prey. It was a pale reddish brown and had an extremely long neck. It had three long fingers on each hand and a large head with two slits in the middle of it instead of a nose. I had never seen anything like it. I wanted to run away but it was as though someone had glued my feet to the spot. It stretched out a long bony arm and beckoned me closer. As I went towards it I saw it had a series of gashes and bruises all over its body. I reached out to touch it but it curled and hissed like a cat. I was unsure what to think. Then I realised it had rows and rows of sharp teeth like thousands of tiny knives. It looked like there were some missing. Suddenly it lunged and it bit my hand. It felt like millions of wasps were stinging the same spot on my hand over and over again. I tried to shake it off, but it just bit me harder. Then a very strange thing happened…”
Drumming With Matt The Hat !
Over the last three weeks Matt The Hat has come in and taken us on the big drum adventure!
With drums from around the world.
This week he introduced a new drum called rebeneke.
It’s a bit like a snaire drum but it doesn’t have the balls on the bottom.
We also used a Bass Drum and djembe.
We have to perform at the Volunteer Hall in a few weeks time in front of loads of people.
Break Dancing
Scrap booking
We have been making a scrap book for our deputy head teacher Mrs Warren because she is leaving next week on Friday. Each class is making a memory book for her. Mrs Warren is a very nice teacher and always doing her job she is nice hearted and we are all sad she is leaving West Linton. We wish good luck with her retirement.
