Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) at Southcraig
At Southcraig our children and young people become increasingly aware of their talents and interests and complete activities with increasing independence as they develop on their journey through the school. Our senior phase pupils are further developing skills for learning, life and work through rich relevant learning tasks and the opportunity to be part of our DYW enterprise groups.
We have 3 main teams which run alongside a Fun and Friendship group developing social skills. In all groups our pupils are developing an understanding of the world of work and business whilst extending their own skills and capabilities and working co-operatively with others.
- Market Garden/Handy Team – Pupils are able to experience and develop skills and knowledge about planting, growing and gardening through a programme of outdoor activities enhanced by our greenhouse and polytunnel. At other times, pupils take responsibility for their school or offer services to our school community, carrying out duties such as cleaning or even car washing!
- Marvellous Makers – Pupils work together to plan, design and create a range of craft items. They develop creative and fine motor skills whilst also enjoying some sensory exploration! These items very often have an eco-focus such as recycling old things to make some new marvellous creations! These items are then sold to others at specific events.
- Sunshine Café – Pupils who run the Sunshine Café work together to organise and offer refreshments to peers and our school community including parents. Pupils are able to develop practical and communication skills throughout. There is a lovely atmosphere at our café and at special events you will also witness pupils working with staff to develop their Barista skills!
