Confucius Classroom Launch

On 22nd September the first official Confucius Classroom launched at Queen Margaret Academy in South Ayrshire.  We are delighted that all the hard work and dedication to Mandarin in our schools has been recognised and that our young people have the opportunity to be truly global citizens.

It is a fantastic learning environment and we are sure it will inspire many young people to learn more about Mandarin and China.

The ceremony was a hit and even included our own traditional tea ceremony and performances from our Mandarin schools.

Cairn Primary

The pupils at Cairn Primary in Maybole have been learning about the Olympics in French. They were reading about Pierre de Coubertin and they were also learning how to say and write the Olympic sports in French.

The children were surprised by how many sports were written the same way in French and English such as le football, le rugby, le golf and le badminton. The older pupils were also able to work out other sports by linking their knowledge of their own language (English) and applying it when reading French. They could, for example, work out that le cyclisme was cycling and that les sports aquatiques were water sports.

Bravo everyone!

Dalmilling E-Twinning

One of the Primary 5 classes in Dalmilling Primary has teamed up with a school in Poland and another in Barcelona to take part in an E-twinning project called “European Friends.”  For this project, the pupils have created a PowerPoint of information about themselves, which they have subsequently shared with their project partners. The P5 class were very excited when they were able to read all about pupils from the other two schools and they then used Google Earth to see both schools up closer.  We hope that there will be more correspondence between the three schools soon.

Grammar Primary

Over the past 2 weeks, the pupils in some of the classes in Grammar Primary have been learning more family member vocabulary and practicing their counting and maths skills in French! They have been playing a game called 100 points, where each given family member is assigned a total number of points each round. The pupils then had to keep a running total of their points to see whether they reached the magic “cent points” by the end of the game.

Well done to all for the fantastic French counting and the lovely written French too!

Marr College Cluster Transition Event

On Friday 6th of May, Marr College held a transition event for all their Primary 7 children in the cluster primary schools. The event combined modern languages and STEM.  Children took part in a film making session for French creating scripts and storyboards with the help of Miss Duffy, Mrs Normansell and the Marr staff. The children then used a range of props to create either an animation or live action movie – all in French! The children were so creative and really showed off both their language and technology skills.

Below is an entire rugby pitch created from post-its and blue tack to feature in a film about ‘Le Sport’.

20160510_101843

On Tuesday, Straiton held their French breakfast or ‘Le Petit Déjeuner’ to celebrate all of their hard work in languages. The morning kicked off with Mrs Wallace presenting to parents about the 1+2 approach to teaching languages and why Straiton felt French and German were such fantastic languages to learn. Then it was over to the children who were absolute stars teaching the parents and family members some vocabulary using games, songs and rhymes. Some of the parents were very competitive and definitely deserved a gold star for their effort! The morning ended on a (sugary) high with mouth-watering croissants, pain au chocolat and fruit salad! A very much deserved feast! Well done to pupils and staff!

Teacher CLPL

Over the past 3 weeks, teachers from across South Ayrshire have been attending and participating in some French CLPL delivered by some of our 1+2 team! Each session has looked at a different level of the Scottish primary school Curriculum.  We started with Early level 2 weeks ago, followed by First level last week and finally Second level last night.  All sessions have had a great number of attendees and have shown the fantastic dedication and commitment of our teachers in  promoting and delivering 1+2 in our schools. Over the next 2 weeks, we will be delivering some CLPL for Spanish as well.

Well done and thank you to all for your participation, enthusiasm and kind words.  Keep up the excellent work in teaching languages in all of your schools!

Fisherton and Crosshill Primary

The older classes at Fisherton and Crosshill have been working hard learning about the Olympics. They were challenged to match the Olympic sports written in French to their English equivalent! They were also learning about school subjects and designing their own ideal timetables!

Meanwhile, the younger classes were pretending to be chefs and creating lots of food and drink orders! They were also learning about clothes after being introduced to them in an unique way by Mr. Laird!
