Wellbeing

Milestone 1

I am becoming aware of when I need help and I am able to communicate this to an adult.

Your child needs to be aware of when they need help and how to ask for help from an adult.

Milestone 2

I am starting to display a range of emotions appropriately.

Is your child beginning to show some control over their emotions? Can your child identify being happy, sad, frustrated etc. Make a happy, sad, frustrated face and see if your child can identify them or ask your child to make a happy, sad or frustrated face.

Milestone 3

I am happy and settled without adult support in a familiar group.

Is your child able to separate happily from you when you drop them off at nursery? Can they explore the playroom with confidence? Do they need minimum or a lot of support and reassurance at times of transition or change of routine?

Milestone 4

I will listen to, and can follow: simple instructions and safety rules, both indoors and outdoors.

Is your child developing a sense of danger and able to respond appropriately to safety instructions given by staff? Are they beginning to recognise the consequences of their own and others actions?

Milestone 5

I am beginning to play with/talk to other children.

Is your child beginning to show an interest in other children? Are they beginning to develop some social skills through play, such as sharing and taking turns in one to one or small group situations?

Milestone 6

I am beginning to show interest, explore meaningfully and play purposefully.

Is your child able to show interest in a range of activities and play for an extended period of time and not flit from one thing to another? Play appears to have a ‘plan’, may try to share this play with others.

Milestone 7

I am willing to taste a variety of healthy foods in nursery.

Tries new and different foods.

Milestone 8

I am becoming more confident during active physical play and developing a range of large motor skills both indoors and outdoors.

Does your child access equipment which helps to develop their co-ordination and can they use it? E.g. stairs, wheeled toys etc. Do they like to run in open spaces? Will they attempt to jump, balance?

Milestone 9

I am beginning to show some control in my hand/eye co-ordination and fine motor skills.

Does your child show an interest in mark making equipment, threading beads, filling/pouring, stacking materials, inset boards, balls etc. and are they developing their use of this equipment and develop their pincer grip?

Milestone 10

I am beginning to develop independence skills e.g. feeding, drinking, dressing, toileting, hand washing, teeth cleaning.

Can your child finger feed/use cutlery/drink from a cup/assist you with dressing them or dress independently/put shoes or boots on/wash their hands thoroughly/clean their teeth/use the toilet?

Encourage your child to do things on their own to develop their independence.
