Communication

Milestone 1

I can use non-verbal gestures to communicate.

E.g. may tap someone to gain attention, point, take their hand to ‘pull’ adult/peer towards something of interest, use British Sign Language or Makaton.

Milestone 2

I can join in at song time and choose familiar rhymes/songs.

Does your child show an interest/know some words/actions of favourite songs/rhymes and ask for them? Can they say a few nursery rhymes?

Here is a link to a few nursery rhymes and songs for your child to sing along with – Nursery Rhymes (click here)

Milestone 3

My representations are beginning to show some detail.

Is your child still at the scribbling stage or are they beginning to draw pictures with some recognisable features?

Milestone 4

As I join in with songs, rhymes and story lines I am beginning to follow the rhythms/patterns of language.

Does your child have any interest in making up/playing with words? Can they move rhythmically, clapping or tapping in time to music?

Milestone 5

In pictures, I can recognise and name people, objects and some letters/numbers.

Is your child beginning to recognise the initial letter of their name? Can they recognise symbols on things? Can they follow stories based on the pictures and point to the pictures in a story?

Milestone 6

I can initiate a simple conversation/ask a simple question of 3-4 words with adults/peers.

Can your child use a simple strategy to appropriately start a conversation and convey a simple message/observation?

Milestone 7

I consistently accumulate new words and phrases.

Is your child regularly coping/using new words, generally in an appropriate context?

Milestone 8

I am beginning to enjoy listening to and exploring stories in a one to one/small group situation.

Does your child engage with books/stories? Are they beginning to look at the pictures with interest and discuss what is happening in the story? Can they follow a simple story line/repetition? Do they show some interest in the characters?

Milestone 9

I talk and act out familiar experiences during play.

Is your child beginning to initiate conversations about familiar people/experiences? Are they starting to narrate/act out familiar experiences during small world or role play?

Milestone 10

I can use a range of mark making tools and am beginning to show some control.

Does your child show an interest in using a variety of tools to mark make both indoors and outdoors? Are they becoming more competent at holding their mark making tools in either a palmer or pincer grasp with their grip becoming firmer?

Milestone 11

I use short sentences to tell what I have done or what I want to do.

Can your child use correct language in correct context? Are they starting to put short sentences together to tell what he/she has done or wants to do? Do they ask questions and show an understanding of the response given?
