As part of our commitment, we are actively working towards achieving the prestigious ECO Schools Scotland Award. This journey has brought together our entire school community, with pupils, staff, and volunteers all playing a vital role in making our school greener and more sustainable.

The Birth of the ECO Warriors

Our eco-journey began last session under the guidance of Mrs. McIlwraith, who led a passionate group of pupils known as the ECO Warriors. This committee, made up of children from various stages within the school, quickly became the driving force behind our environmental initiatives.

Transforming the School Garden

One of the first projects the ECO Warriors tackled was the transformation of our school garden. They planted a variety of fruits and vegetables, which are now being used in school cooking projects, promoting healthy eating and a hands-on understanding of food production. Additionally, with the help of community volunteers, the ECO Warriors sourced and planted fruit trees, ensuring a lasting source of fresh produce for our school.

Ecological Assessments and Action Plan

To ensure our efforts were strategic and impactful, the ECO Warriors conducted thorough Ecological Assessments of our school grounds. These assessments allowed us to identify key areas for improvement and guided the creation of an action plan that drives our ongoing environmental work. The ECO Warriors shared their findings with the entire school during a special assembly, helping to build a collective sense of responsibility and commitment to our ECO goals.

Harvesting and Cooking with Nature

One of the most exciting aspects of our eco-work has been harvesting local produce. The ECO Warriors picked brambles from the local area and apples from our school’s apple tree. These were then used to create a delicious bramble and apple crumble, giving our pupils a hands-on experience of farm-to-table cooking and the joy of using fresh, homegrown ingredients.

Implementing Recycling in Every Classroom

In our continued efforts to reduce waste and promote recycling, the ECO Warriors have successfully sourced new recycling bins for each classroom. These bins are designated for recycling plastics, papers, and general waste, allowing us to manage our waste more effectively and responsibly. By implementing this system, we are teaching our pupils the importance of recycling and helping them develop habits that contribute to a more sustainable future.

Continuing the Journey with Mrs. Menzies

As we enter the new school year, Mrs. Menzies is excited to take the lead and continue our journey towards achieving the ECO Schools Scotland Award. The ECO Warriors will remain at the heart of our efforts, building on last year’s successes and driving forward new initiatives. With their passion and dedication, we are confident that we will make significant progress in our environmental work this session.

Get Involved and Make a Difference

Our ECO Warriors Committee is open to all pupils, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to our environmental efforts. Together, we can make a real difference—not just within our school, but in the wider community as well.

We look forward to continuing our journey towards sustainability and achieving the ECO Schools Scotland Award. We invite all members of our school community to join us in making Barr Primary a greener, more sustainable place for everyone.

Our Journey to Achieving the ECO Schools Scotland Award At Barr Primary School, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
