Acting out a nursery rhyme

When children “act out” a poem or nursery rhyme, they learn to love its rhythm and rhyme and they begin to see in their imagination the story that has been created. Children will grow as readers by connecting feelings with the written or spoken word.

What you’ll need:

Poems or nursery rhymes that your child will enjoy. Use these clips if you don’t have any suitable rhymes at home. Your child may know Incy Wincy Spider so it’s a good one to start with. Once they have got the idea you could move onto the second clip.

What to do:

As you share the poem or nursery rhyme, talk about the characters and what parts your child likes and dislikes. Can they make any connections – does it remind them of anything or a real-life experience?

Challenge – Can your children start to act out the nursery rhyme and play the part of a character? Why don’t you get involved too and make it a family story or nursery rhyme.

Days of the Week – Weather

Can you design a chart with each of the days of the week on it? Each day, have a look outside and see what the weather is like. Can you draw a picture of the weather for that day? How many different types of weather did you record?

You could have two boxes for each day and record the weather at two different times to see if there were any changes.

What do you do like to do when it is sunny?

What do you do when it is a rainy day?

Ask everyone in your house what their favourite weather is. What is the most popular?

Magic Remote Control

This is a fun game using an ordinary remote control.  Children press the buttons and shout out an instruction, which controls the people in the room:

Play- walk forward

Rewind- walk backwards

Fast forward- run quickly

Pause- everyone freezes

You can also add some more functions, eg slow motion button, fast forward super speed, or let the children’s imaginations decide what other commands are on the magic remote control!

All the staff have all been seeing lots of rainbows in windows when they have been out their daily walk. We know that some of you have painted and coloured a rainbow too!

Why don’t you make a rainbow – using stones which you can find in the garden or when out for a family walk. Paint the stones and make your own rainbow.  Put it in the garden for everyone to see.

This also provides an opportunity for older children within the family to scaffold learning and have fun in making their own rainbows.

We have been talking about colours and patterns in our Early Learning Class. We have been thinking about the colours of the rainbow on our blog too.

Looking at the colours and talking about patterns – children can be encouraged to use different colours to make patterns – if the weather is good, the learning can take place outside. By using a range of different resources, the children can make their own patterns on the pavement or patio.
