Homework

Homework is an integral part of learning and teaching. It provides the opportunity for the development of self reliance, self discipline, self confidence and participation in taking responsibility for learning by your child. It also strengthens the link between home and school in providing an opportunity for parents and carers to share in the learning process. Homework can take many forms and will reflect the age, stage and area of learning currently being undertaken by your child. It will be issued on a regular basis and will be varied, meaningful and interesting.

Williamsburgh Primary school has a homework policy based on Renfrewshire Council’s policy and guidance. You can request a copy of this policy from the school office.

At the early stages homework will consist of reading, maths or language activities, where parental help is encouraged and welcomed. In addition all children in P1 and P2 take a library book home each week. This fosters an interest in reading and enhances talking and listening.

From P4 upwards homework is introduced more formally. A homework jotter facilitates the daily contact between school and parents. Both teachers and parents are encouraged to write comments in this jotter. Class teachers provide guidance about homework tasks both in the homework jotter and in their termly letters home to parents.

As our pupils get older, homework is used to encourage pupils to budget their time, integrate learning by using a variety of sources of information and establish the discipline of self-motivation, preparing them for the greater depth of study to be encountered in Secondary Education.

Homework should not exceed 10-15 minutes for P1-3 pupils, 15-20 minutes for P4-5, or 20-30 minutes for P6-7 pupils each evening.
