In Williamsburgh, we are developing our numeracy and mathematics programme in line with a Curriculum for Excellence. As outlined in the Principles and Practice documents –
“……..Numeracy is not only a subset of mathematics; it is also a life skill which permeates and supports all areas of learning, allowing young people access to the wider curriculum.”
Numeracy, Principles and Practice, Curriculum for Excellence
“Mathematics equips us with many of the skills required for life, learning and work. Understanding the part that mathematics plays in almost all aspects of life is crucial. …………”
Mathematics, Principles and Practice, Curriculum for Excellence
The numeracy and mathematics experiences and outcomes in a Curriculum for Excellence are structured within three main organisers, each of which contains a number of subdivisions:
Number, money and measure, Shape, position and movement, Information handling
From the early-level through to the second-level, these will be developed through practical activities, discussions, investigations and the teaching of skills and techniques. Some of our pupils will progress onto third-level outcomes.
All teachers ensure continuity and progression by planning using the experiences and outcomes from CfE. Active learning takes place at all stages. The main published resources used are TeeJay, Heinemann Mathematics and Primary Maths in Action.
